Exploring Dickensian Delights in Ebenezer and the Invisible World

At the recent EGX event, I had the chance to delve into the enchanting world of “Ebenezer and the Invisible World,” a 2D Metroidvania game that skillfully weaves the narrative of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol into a captivating gaming experience. As the game unfolds on consoles and PC, players will step into the miserly shoes of Ebenezer Scrooge in a Victorian-fantasy world filled with spectral allies, dark secrets, and challenging adversaries. The game oozes that 80’s cartoon style and reminds me of the fantastic 2018 indie title Forgotten Anne.

A Victorian Odyssey

“Ebenezer and the Invisible World” takes us on a journey through the streets of Victorian-era London, offering a vivid and meticulously hand-drawn landscape that captures the essence of Dickens’ timeless tale. As Ebenezer Scrooge, players navigate multiple regions of the city, unraveling the hidden mysteries of the Malthus family.

Spectral Sidekicks

One of the game’s standout features is the collaboration with spectral allies, each with its own unique abilities and captivating stories. These ethereal companions lend their powers to Ebenezer as he embarks on a quest to thwart the nefarious plans of a wealthy industrialist and his formidable Private Guard.

Movement Ghosts: Unconventional Navigation

The game introduces Movement Ghosts, a delightful ensemble including trapeze artists, mountaineers, and time-traveling professors. These spectral companions not only enhance exploration but also provide Ebenezer with extraordinary abilities to confront the legion of Unrepentant Ghosts unleashed by the return of the Dark Spirit.

Narrative Richness

Engaging narratives, dialogues, and in-game cutscenes bring the story to life, allowing players to delve into the tragic backstories of the Ghosts haunting the mortal realm. The intricacies of the plot unfold through encounters with various characters, providing a Dickensian depth to the game.

Non-linear Exploration and Material Collection

The game’s non-linear exploration, reminiscent of classic Metroidvania titles, adds layers of complexity to the adventure. Unlocking new items and abilities involves collecting limited materials such as Ether, Iron, and Mugwort. Discovering secret areas and rare materials further enriches the gaming experience, encouraging thorough exploration.

A Hand-Drawn Masterpiece

The meticulous hand-drawn art and animations serve as a testament to the game’s commitment to visual excellence. Frame-by-frame coloring and animations create a visual feast that complements the narrative richness and immersive gameplay.

Ebenezer and the Invisible World promises a delightful blend of Victorian charm, Dickensian storytelling, and challenging gameplay. As I immersed myself in the world of spectral allies and dark secrets, I couldn’t help but anticipate the full release on these various gaming platforms. Stay tuned for an in-depth review as we uncover the mysteries of Dickens’ world through the lens of this intriguing Metroidvania experience.
