Mobile gaming is rapidly expanding. Although professional gaming is typically conceived as staying at home and playing on desktops, the reality is now quite different. Modern gamers opt for accessibility and portable devices – hence the phones designed for gaming.

If you are looking for a new phone that is powerful enough to support hours of entertainment, you are in luck. Gone is the era where you had to choose between ultra-powerful specifications and the cool design of a normal phone. We created a list of the best gaming phones that are perfect for just about any game that you want to become well-versed in.

Here is our list of best gaming phones for 2020 – perfect for the start of the new decade.

razor-phone-gaming

Razer Phone 2

Razer released this phone back in 2018. And okay, it might be outdated by the industry standards, but the potency of the device ensures it stays on our lists permanently. Let’s start with the key traits. Razer Phone 2 boasts the 120Hz refresh rate which is excellent for a phone that handles demanding games.

There’s also a 1440×2560 resolution with a 16:9 ratio. This brings it close to 513 PPI. HDR support enables rich content straight from services such as Amazon Prime. Under the hood, you’ll find Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 paired with 8GB RAM. With a 4,000mAh battery, stellar speakers, and IGZO LCD, what’s not to love? It started with Android 8.1 Oreo, but soon got the update for Android 9 Pie. The phone is perfect for gaming, but there is one little drawback that caught our attention. The phone is equipped with only 64GB of storage, although you do have microSD expansion up to 1TB.

realme gaming

Realme X2 Pro

Realme X2 Pro runs on Android 9.0 Pie, but it can be upgraded to Android 10.0. The battery is the same as with the Razer Phone 2, but this gem packs a Qualcomm SM8150 Snapdragon 855+ chipset, HDR, four cameras, and 6-12GB RAM. The Super AMOLED display brings forth content in 1080 x 2400 with a 20:9 ratio. Realme X2 Pro is armed with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is becoming the lower standard for gaming phones. In terms of gaming, you will be able to spend hours playing games without interruption. This shiny little gem costs less than most phones on this list. The best thing about this phone is that it’s great for both professional gaming and ordinary mobile activities.

black shark

Black Shark 2 Pro

Xiaomi’s Black Shark 2 Pro is praised as one of the best gaming phones in the industry today. With Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset instead of the regular Snapdragon 855 that’s stored in Black Shark 2, it’s a beast. Or, should we say, a beauty? The faster processor brings it to the top of the Android chain, right with Nubia Red Magic 3S and Asus ROG Phone 2. To maintain high performance during long hours of gaming, the processor has a multilayer liquid cooling system.

To distinguish this device from other phones you won’t have to look at the refresh rate. Here we have 60Hz, while Nubia Red Magic and ROG Phone boast 90Hz and 120Hz, respectively. Nevertheless, the Pro edition of the Black Shark has a 240Hz touch-report rate. This means that you can potentially expect lower latency rates thanks to a response speed of 34.7 milliseconds. Oh, the phone has a button for gaming mode as well. Cool, right?

Once activated, the Sharkspace button will minimize interruptions, clear the phone’s memory, and boost performance. The only thing that will be left to do is enjoy your favorite games

red-magic-3

ZTE Nubia Red Magic 3S

Nubia Red Magic 3S is just what its name says: magic. The AMOLED display has a 1080×2340 resolution with a 19:5:9 ratio. A 5000 mAh battery, coupled with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, 90Hz refresh rate, and a built-in cooling fan makes this phone a gamer’s dream come true. Red Magic 3S shares a couple of characteristics with Black Shark 2 Pro and ROG Phone 2.

The resolution is the same, all three phones run on Android 9.0, and the processors are Snapdragon 855+. However, Red Magic 3S can capture videos in 8K and has only one rear camera. Nubia Red Magic 3S also boasts 8-12GB RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The exterior of the device is designed to appeal to gamers. The little red switch activates Game Space, your game launcher. With it, you can control the fan, mute notifications, and create a perfect environment for playing games.

asus-rog-phone-2

Asus ROG Phone 2

The crown jewel of the list is the Asus ROG Phone 2. This device is the heaviest of the bunch, but that’s because it is packed in an aluminum case. It is also one of the strongest phones on this list. It has an AMOLED display with 1080×2340 pixels, Snapdragon 855+, 8-12GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Nice, right? Well, throw in a 6000 mAh battery, 120Hz refresh rate, and AeroActive Cooler 2 and you get a trailblazer. This device has the highest price of the bunch as well. But if you take into consideration the potency and power it holds under the hood – it’s more than worth it. Especially if you are looking for top quality for 2020.

In the past, the gaming hardware debate was limited to PCs and console gaming, but the dynamics of gaming has changed now. As the processing and graphical capabilities of smartphones are reaching new heights, gaming is becoming a common use case for mobile devices. Every year, more and more mobile phones are hitting the market that can play games like Fortnite and PUBG at an impressive visual and graphical settings.

2019 is ramping up to be a banner year for iOS and Android gaming, as we will see some exciting games from well-known developers in every imaginable genre. From the AR game like Minecraft Earth to the physics-driven puzzle game Human: Fall Flat, from major remakes to brand new IPs; from racing games to terrifying horror games, 2019 is going to be an exciting year for gamers.

Be it upcoming new games or remakes of popular old games or even updates to existing games; this year has something to offer to everyone. If you are the one looking into the world of gaming for new and upcoming mobile games, look no further because you have come to the right place. Here, we will be discussing some of the Android and iOS games that we look forward to playing in 2019.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the subject.

apex-legends

Apex Legends:

Apex Legends became a surprise hit on PC as well as console and brought around 25 million from around the world in just the first few weeks. While the game is a huge hit for PC and console, EA is trying to bring a mobile version of Apex Legends that will compete with games like Fortnite and PUBG in the mobile space.

Following the release of Apex Legends, Andrew Wilson – the CEO of EA – discussed the possibility of a mobile version in an investors call and stated:

“As I said earlier, we are looking at how to take the game to mobile and cross-play over time, and I also expect that this game will have tremendous value in Asia, and we’re in conversations about that.”

The company may have financial incentives to release a mobile version of the game; however, the game is graphically more demanding than its competitors, and we can only hope that it won’t have any graphical issues on the current high-end mobile sets.

Human-Fall-Flat

Human: Fall Flat:

Human: Fall Flat from is a puzzle game by No Brakes Games with platformer elements. The game was initially released on PC and consoles in 2016, but thanks to an agreement between the publisher Curve Digital and 505 games, Human: Fall Flat is making its way to Android.

In the game, you have to steer Bob – an average guy with no extraordinary skills – through his dreams that are full of puzzles, surprises and dangers. Bob can walk, jump, fall, climb, hold objects and use them to clear a puzzle. You might have multiple solutions to solve a puzzle, and you will choose one depending on your skills.

There is no word on when Human: Fall Flat will be made available for mobile users. Although it is not confirmed, it looks like it will be a premium game, unfortunately, which means that you will be spending a few bucks to play it.

minecraft-earth

Minecraft Earth:

Many gamers are looking forward to Minecraft Earth, a Microsoft’s new AR (Augmented Reality) mobile game for Android and iOS devices. According to the game’s website, players will be able to build structures with other players and team up with others for mini-adventures. Players will also be able to battle Minecraft mobs. The closed beta program will be released this summer; however, there is no word on when the full version will officially launch. To play in the closed beta, you will need your Xbox or Microsoft account and app store log in. You will also have to answer a few questions to complete your registration. You can sign up for the closed beta of the game here.

  1. Free for all
  2. Frontline
  3. Hardpoint
  4. Team Deathmatch
  5. Domination

Activision also confirmed that the game would feature a Battle Royale mode that lets up to 100 players per match. Before the start of a match, you can pick loadout elements including weapon camos, item skins and a class that includes Mechanic, Clown, and Ninja, among others. Each class has its own skills and ability.

The Call of Duty: Mobile will be a free-to-play title, and the closed beta is already live in a few countries. There is no word from the developers regarding the release date; however, it is listed on the Play Store, so you can sign up and get notified when the game is released.

big-barn-world

Big Barn World Social Farming:

Big Barn World (BBW) Social Farming by Airg Inc. is a new and improved version of BBW Classic. It is a new social farming sensation where you can play on your own or with your friends. It lets the players to join forces with friends and build booming farms or grow massive crops and split the profits.

As the year steadily moves towards its end it’s time to take a look back and deliberate what has been on offer throughout 2018.

Within all those games selections in the Google Play Store and iOS store there have been some true gems, but it can be quite a challenge to find them so below are some of the best Android games that you can find on the current market.

As well as there being hundreds and thousands of titles to choose from there is a wide range of genres that include platforming, role-playing, shoot ‘em ups (Fortnite!) and sports amongst others and below you can find a tiny percentage of what is on offer but it also gives you some ideas if you want something new for your evening commute home.

Fortnite_Mobile_interface

Pokémon Go was massive in 2018 and uses the camera on a player’s smartphone to create for the user to create a Pokémon-themed alternate reality experience which caused some issues in the start with players chasing their Pokémon over busy roads or into restricted areas – ah there is no limit to where someone will go to find their Pokémon.

Another spin-off from a very successful franchise is The Tower Assassin’s Creed which might not be the full game but nevertheless, it’s fun to play as you attempt to build your tower as high as you can using one of your favourite Assassin’s Creed characters.

Real Racing 3 has some beautifully recreated cars on an impressive line-up of real race tracks from around the world. There are numerous events to enter as well as being a cross-platform multiplayer. Players are offered a ton of customization options which are great fun making Real Racing 3 one of the best racing games around.

Dragon Ball popularity is enjoying somewhat of a revival and Dragon Ball Heroes buys into that recurring popularity with the game appealing to Dragon Ball fans across the world. It’s a lot of fun and has you fighting through a series of different levels where you collect characters and abilities the more you progress. Another plus point for Dragon Ball Legends is that it was built to be played in portrait mode which means that it is easy to play on the road.

For adventure games, you can’t go far wrong with Monster Hunter World which has enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the gaming console world and now for the mobile there is Monster Hunter Stories. You do pay for this game but there are no in-app purchases which is a big plus point for many players.

Cambridge-based PlayFusion have passed the halfway mark for their Kickstarter campaign for Lightseekers. With only $85,000 left to reach their funding goal, they looks set to redefine how we ‘define’ the toy-to-life market.

Lightseekers is an action and fantasy adventure role-playing game on mobiles and tablets with desktop versions coming soon after. The game will be free to download and features a fusion of fantasy and reality integrating video games, smart action figures with artificial intelligence, augmented reality, interactive trading cards and more, creating the most ambitious cross-media entertainment platform ever conceived.

lightseekers2

Lightseekers will feature an expansive, ever-changing narrative that provides players with new adventures, worlds and characters to experience. The game aims to immerse gamers in a deep, vibrant, lore-filled universe, while seamlessly integrating the digital world with the real world in completely new and innovative ways.

The Lightseekers characters also offer interchangeable accessories that bridge the gap between reality and fantasy. Equipping an accessory onto an action figure will have an immediate effect in the game, opening up new abilities and skills. The figures, weapons and accessories all store the vital stats within, so they can be shared with friends in real life, helping others unlock different content or helping them ‘level up’. In addition, flight packs allow players to magically control their in-game character by moving the toy.

lightseekers toys

Aside from the toys and games, there’s also an interactive collectible trading card game with almost 400 cards at launch that further enhances the world of Lightseekers. The online game, the real-world trading card game and the figures can be enjoyed on their own, but when played together the experience will become even more engrossing. The cards can be scanned by the Lightseekers app, in order to create immersive augmented reality experiences, reward game players, and unlocks powerful in-game abilities.

This cross-media fusion doesn’t stop at just the cards though. The Lightseekers platform is built to be scalable and could easily be adapted to offer rewards when interacting with almost anything, whether it’s a poster on a wall, a point of sale item in a shop or even a music track on the radio. The scope is massive, which makes this one of the most intriguing games to look out for in 2017.

Check out the official Lightseekers website for more information. Back their Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/playfusion/lightseekers

Pokemon Go is sweeping the world and a renewed love for those pocket monsters is upon us. Unless you have been living in a part of the world in which the roll out hasn’t yet begun, you have probably played it or at least heard about it. Pokemon Go is essentially a mix of Google Maps and a Paper Toss game, but weirdly it works. In actual fact, Pokemon Go is a re-skinning of an older game called Ingress, in which you fight for supremacy over inter-dimensional beings. Pokemon Go has simplified it and removed most of the depth, which may be re-added in subsequent updates. Despite its simplified gameplay, it still took me a lot of question before understanding the finer points of Pokemon Go. I thought I would jot them down here for all to enjoy:

pokemon-go-basics

The Basics

Pokemon Go is a location based collection game in which a player created character walks around a stylised Google Map looking for pocket monsters or ‘Pokemon’. The launch version has 142 creatures to collect and they are collected by flicking balls at them. Pokemon can appear anywhere, but the algorithm favours built up urban areas, over rural wide open spaces. Certain types, such as Water Pokemon appear near bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.

As the games favours explorers, you need to be prepared to put in some legwork to be the ultimate Pokemon hunter. Social media is awash with people who have been ‘tricked’ in to exercise thanks to the game.

Pokeballs and Throwing

When your phone vibrates it means a Pokemon is near by. If you tap the offending creature, the game used uses augmented reality (using the phone camera) to layer a Pokemon in the real world view. Players start with 100 Pokeballs and these are flicked at creatures to capture them. As the game progresses, the creatures are able to dodge them and escape from them forcing you to use up more balls. Once collected they can be found in you Pokedex.

pokemon-go-pokestops

Pokestops

A Pokestop is map location where players can stock up of items such as Pokeballs and Eggs. Pokestops tend to be landmarks and places or interest such as nature reserves and historical signs. When you are close enough, players can tap the location and spin the image to receive a selection of spoils.

Pokestops can be good motivators for children as you can walk from stop to stop or you may even find one in a place you visit often. In many towns, the local church is a Pokestop so if you are having trouble motivating the kids on a Sunday morning, having a Pokestop at church could help peak their interest.

pokemon-go-items

Items

There are various items available to budding young trainers that include items that produce, lure and heal Pokemon.

Balls

There are three types of ball, standard, great and ultra. Each type has a higher chance of capturing and securing Pokemon.

Eggs

There are two types of egg, the standard egg can be found at Pokestops and require you to put them in an incubator and walk 2km, 5km or 10km in order to hatch them. The longer the walk, the rarer the Pokemon. Lucky Eggs double your experience points (XP) for half an hour so they are best saved for when you are in a Pokemon heavy area.

Potions

The four types of potions include standard, super, ultra and max. Each of which, replenish the health of battle worn Pokemon (see gym section for information on battles). There is also a selection of ‘revive’ potions which awaken fainted Pokemon if they lose a battle.

Lures

If you do not fancy trekking into a built up area there are two ways you can get the Pokemon to come to you. Firstly you can use incense to attract Pokemon to your current location for 30 minutes, and secondly to can attach a lure to a Pokestop to attach Pokemon to that location so that you and anyone near can can the attracted creatures.

Outside of these items there are Razz berries that help you catch difficult Pokemon and different types of incubator meaning you can hatch more than one Pokemon at a time.

Strategies for Maximizing Items and Resources

In Pokemon Go, items and resources can be hard to come by. Here are a few strategies to help you get the most out of your resources:

  • Stock up on Pokeballs at Pokestops. Pokeballs are essential to catching Pokemon, so be sure to visit Pokestops regularly to stock up on them. You can also use Lures and Incense to attract Pokemon to you.
  • Use Lucky Eggs wisely. Lucky Eggs double your XP for 30 minutes, so be sure to use them in areas with a lot of Pokemon to maximize your XP gains.
  • Hatch eggs while you walk. Eggs require you to walk a certain distance to hatch, so be sure to keep your app open while you walk to maximize your progress.
  • Save your potions and revives for gym battles. Potions and revives can be hard to come by, so be sure to save them for when you really need them.

pokemon-go-gyms

The Gyms

Gyms are essentially battle grounds and can contain around 10 trainers. Basically, you need to defeat three to take enter the gym. There is a ‘prestige wheel’ that reduces after each battle but I want to keep it simple. By being one of the trainers you get the two most precious commodities in the game, Pokemon Gold and Stardust which acts as in-game currency and power up material. Gyms are usually held by elites with powerful Pokemon but you can leave at any time to gain valuable experience points that will help at a later date. Players can take six Pokemon into a gym and one in, you leave your most powerful to guard your position. Battles can be done with friends and three people can take a Gym at the same time.

How to Build a Strong Pokemon Roster

Building a strong Pokemon roster is essential to succeeding in Pokemon Go. Here are a few tips to help you build a powerful team:

  • Focus on catching Pokemon with high CP (combat power). CP is an indicator of a Pokemon’s strength, so be sure to catch Pokemon with high CP to build a strong roster.
  • Evolve your Pokemon. Evolving your Pokemon can increase their CP and make them stronger in battles.
  • Use Stardust and Candy to power up your Pokemon. Stardust and Candy can be used to increase a Pokemon’s CP, making them even stronger in battles.
  • Build a diverse team. Try to build a team with a variety of Pokemon types to cover all your bases in battles.

pokemon-go-perils

The Perils

You may have already heard in the news that people have walked off cliffs, walked into mugging traps and generally endangered themselves as a result of playing. The three main issues are addiction, negligence and endangerment. It’s easy to get addicted so ensure that children take regular breaks. Having your head in your phone can result in walking into roads, stopping in roads to catch Pokemon and a slew of other problems. Teach your children to look up and use the vibration setting to feel for Pokemon over starring. Finally, players need to be careful that they do not go anywhere dangerous such as dark allies, building sites or even in open water to catch Pokemon. It sounds crazy but it happens.

Tips for Playing Pokemon Go Safely

While Pokemon Go is a fun and engaging game, it’s important to remember that it’s just a game. Players need to take certain precautions to ensure their safety while playing. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while catching Pokemon:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t play the game while walking, biking, or driving. Always be aware of what’s going on around you, and don’t take unnecessary risks to catch Pokemon.
  • Be cautious of strangers. While Pokemon Go is a great way to meet new people, it’s important to remember that not everyone is who they seem. Avoid meeting strangers in secluded areas, and always meet in a public, well-lit location.
  • Play with friends. Not only is it more fun to play with friends, but it’s also safer. You’ll have someone to watch your back and help you out if you need it.
  • Stay hydrated. Pokemon Go can be a lot of walking, so be sure to bring water with you to stay hydrated.

Trading

Trading is a feature that allows players to trade Pokémon with other players. It can be done in-person or remotely with friends, and it requires both players to be at least level 10 and within 100 meters of each other. Trading can be an effective way to fill gaps in your Pokédex or to obtain Pokémon with high IVs (Individual Values) that are difficult to catch.

pokemon-go-research-tasks

Research Tasks

Research tasks are objectives that players can complete to earn rewards such as items, experience points, and encounter opportunities with rare Pokémon. They are divided into two categories: Field Research and Special Research. Field Research tasks can be obtained by spinning PokéStops, while Special Research tasks are typically given by Professor Willow.

Events

Pokémon Go hosts regular events that offer players the chance to catch exclusive Pokémon, earn extra rewards, and participate in unique gameplay experiences. Some events are global, while others are location-specific. Some examples of events include Community Day, which features a specific Pokémon and special bonuses, and Raid Weekends, which offer an increased chance of encountering and catching rare Raid Bosses.

Raid Battles

Raid Battles are cooperative battles in which players team up to defeat a powerful Pokémon called a Raid Boss. Raid Battles take place at Gyms, and they require a Raid Pass to participate. Raid Passes can be obtained by spinning a Photo Disc at a Gym, and players can earn one free Raid Pass per day. Raid Battles are a great way to catch rare Pokémon and earn rewards such as Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and TMs (Technical Machines).

Friends

The Friends feature allows players to connect with each other in the game and exchange gifts, increase Friendship levels, and participate in special research tasks. By increasing Friendship levels, players can unlock bonuses such as increased attack power in Raid Battles and reduced Stardust costs for trading Pokémon.

Quick Tips:

  • Don’t get attached you early Pokemon
  • If you have multiple Pokemon of the same type, use the ‘transfer’ button to transfer its power (candy) to your strongest version.
  • Don’t ‘Power Up’ early on as stardust is precious
  • In the settings menu you can switch it to battery-saver mode to conserve power.
  • Turn off sound effect and music if you are jogging to listen to your music instead
  • If you are heading out, turn off WiFi and sometimes 4G on your phone in order to stay logged in. When the game needs to jump from 3G to 4G or WiFi it can lose connection.

Mobile games are now more than just a way to pass the time with more and more players using them to simulate their passions from real life. These include adrenaline junkies who get their kicks from extreme sports and games that get the blood pumping. Here are the best mobile games on the market for those adrenaline junkies.

Zynga-Poker

Zynga Poker

We start this list with something out of the leftfield. This might not involve players jumping out of a plane or flying down a track at 100mph but it is a game that will certainly push your senses to the limit. Zynga Poker started life as a social app on Facebook but its popularity meant it crossed over onto the mobile platform with huge success.

It has been estimated that 350 million users have played Zynga Poker since its release back in 2007. The tension at the tables and the heart-pumping moments of a heads up river with your entire pot on the line cannot be matched by any sport. If you are looking for excitement, intensity, and an emotional rollercoaster then you need to look no further than this classic card game that combines poker and social media to deliver a unique mobile gaming experience.

Casino games like poker have been in the market for many years now, when they were first introduced most gaming companies thought it would die away. But as technology has improved, especially the smartphone industry, gaming on the go has been easier than ever before. If you want to know about what games are available there are great mobile online casino sources, such as this mobile guide from Casino.com.au. Gain all the knowledge you need on online casinos before you get started today.

AG-Drive

AG Drive

Now this is more your stereotypical adrenaline junkie mobile gaming title. If you grew up in an era when F-Zero X stormed the N64 and Wipeout was the must have racer on the Playstation, then this will certainly strike a chord. If you are too young to even know what an N64 is then you will still be interested in playing this game, developed by ZORG, that takes high-speed racing to a new and futuristic level.

The graphics on this game ensure the gaming experience becomes very immersive. The high-octane gameplay will keep you on the edge of your seat. The race tracks included on this game include loops, dips, dives, and physics-defying layouts. Game modes include standard races, time trials, and elimination races so there is something for everyone.

This is a skater boy’s dream. Features on this mobile game include realistic physics, deck wear, realistic board flicks, stunning skate parks, slow motion, player challenges, replays, and global leaderboards. real-boxing

Real Boxing

Boxing is undergoing a slight renaissance after years of being kicked to the curb due to boring fights and the emergence of UFC. However, the improving heavyweight division and a generation of boxers inspired by more modern fighters is forcing boxing to come out of the shadows and into the mainstream once again.

Real Boxing is a mobile title developed by Vivid Games and is an unbelievably realistic boxing game considering it is only on the mobile platform. It really rivals any console boxing game in terms of graphics and gameplay. The Unreal Engine delivers high performance mobile gaming. A range of game modes including real-time multiplayer, week tournaments, arcade mode, and underground tournaments keep the action fresh. The career mode is also an innovative feature that allows you to fight over 30 boxers in an attempt to become world champion. There is even an option to customize your own boxer so you can put yourself, family, friends, or even your professional boxing hero into the game and fight as that individual.

asphalt8-airborne

Asphalt 8: Airborne

This might not sound like the most enthralling game on the mobile market but this is a high-quality title that is one of the most popular racing games on Android for a reason. Gameloft is the developer behind this mobile game and it has been touted as the mobile answer to Gran Turismo. If you have played Gran Turismo or any of its franchise titles on the PlayStation console, then you will know what sort of treat to expect.

The game has welcomed over 200 million unique players and it gives players the chance to drive one of over 140 different vehicles including a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ford, Audi, and Mercedes. The graphics are unrivalled on the mobile market. The multiplayer option is also stunning with races that can pit you against up to 12 other racers. The concept of virtual reality is by no means a new thing, but good virtual reality most certainly is. We’ve all been waiting for the time when VR would do what it was intended to do, scare us, entertain us and most importantly, astound us. Previous attempts to launch virtual reality into the world of online games and applications have been less than successful, but consumers are being told to get ready for bigger and better soon to be released VR which will not disappoint. According to media reports, 2016 is the year that will see the introduction of brilliant virtual reality in the form of Oculus’ Rift headset, HTC’s Vive and Sony’s VR for Playstation 4. Gaming is really where the interest for all things virtual reality lies, but what exactly are the implications for online gaming now we are on the cusp of a VR revolution?
oculus-rift

Oculus Rift, alongside the hand held Oculus Touch, according to its developers, promises to “raise your game”, allowing you to step into your favourite game joining gamers world-wide during your journey into virtual reality. The Oculus home page is quite convincing in its spiel, stating that “Rift’s advanced display technology combined with its precise, low-latency constellation tracking system enables the sensation of presence – the feeling as though you’re actually there. The magic of presence changes everything. You’ve never experienced immersion like this.” If this is true, I’m in! The implications of such technology is astounding, as by not only providing an entertainment platform for gamers that enjoy the thrill of VR fantasy games, but by inviting those who enjoy online gambling and casino games into the world of virtual reality, a wider audience can be reached. Already online casinos are going from strength to strength, but imagine what VR could do for players looking for even more realism? For example, Coral’s Poker site has been getting rave reviews for its ability to recreate the thrill of in-person gaming, but by bringing the concept of virtual reality to the table, a user’s experience will surely be enhanced. As perhaps the most social and interactive of all casino games, poker has the chance to shine through the use of a VR headset such as the Oculus Rift. If a major online gambling site such as Coral looks to unleash its visually exciting games into the world of VR, users all over the globe could enjoy an even more realistic gaming experience from the comfort of their own homes.

htc-vive

As winner of Best New Tech and Gadgets at CES 2016, The HTC Vive is a highly anticipated VR headset. Like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive promises to completely immerse the user in the world of online gaming. It is also highly practical, allowing you to switch between VR and reality through the use of a front facing camera, and also allows the user to switch between apps and games without having to remove their headset. Whether or not these VR headsets will prove as remarkable as their developers claim is yet to be seen, but there is another aspect to consider whatever VR item you purchase – the price. As like most technology, the first release of successful items will be expensive but as for which product provides the most value for money, it appears this would be the Playstation 4 addition. This piece of VR tech simply requires the device itself, and the Playstation 4 which retails at around £300, whereas the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive need some heavy duty hardware, in the form of a purpose-built gaming PC costing around £1000, to make them worthwhile. However, the chance to get your hands on some pretty impressive VR is certainly tempting and if they really are as good as they have the potential to be, this new technology could change the way we game forever.

The Gaming Debugged sister site AppTrawler.com has a whole host of reviews and previews of games and apps. The following is a review of the fantastic Asphalt 8.

The Asphalt series has gone airborne in the 8th outing for this hugely popular series. As you would expect, Gameloft has nailed the handling of the cars using the right amount of tilt action to control your vehicle. Acceleration and speed is automatic and you have control over the nitro bursts with one thumb and breaking or power sliding with the other. The game is great fun for the price tag as you have a massive 8 seasons and 180 races to complete. All of these races are set over a limited amount of countries but each track has a myriad of alternative routes and sneaky shortcuts.
asphalt-8-airborne-2
Whilst the game is thoroughly enjoyable, some parts do involve a bit of grinding in order to get enough cash to improve your car and buy better rides. This wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t the constant reminder that real money can buy you cash and car packs go help speed up or improve the game.if you are fine with the simple cars and do not yearn for the Camaro or that Electric Mercedes from Transformers 3 then you’ll be fine. Otherwise you will find yourself perusing the cars packs being tempted to spend some cash. Sadly, no one pack can be bought that would give you a range of cars across classes which is a little sneaky.

As you can guess from the name, Asphalt 8 takes to the skies as ramps, jumps and bridges give you the chance to gain extra nitro power as you hang ten and grab some air. Many of the star achievements ask you to perform airborne tricks such as barrel rolls and spins in order to get the maximum five stars. Whilst this is a great addition to the series, some of the tricks don’t always activate as you expect and can be a little glitchy. This, however, is rare and some times you welcome the simple jump as tricks can often cost you speed.

asphalt-8-airborne-main-screen

Aside from the usual racing mode there are two additional game types called ‘infected’ and ‘knockdown’. Infected sees players getting infected by other cars (and going green) and using their unlimited nitro boosts attempt to infect other players before burning out. Knockdown is less about the racing and more about the destruction as the cars all attempt to gain the most amount of crashes.

The multiplayer game experience blew my mind, as I didn’t think such an experience was possible on a tablet. There is always people to race and apart from a few people leaving the race seconds before the end (usually when they are losing) the race feels solid and enjoyable.

With fantastic graphics, a tremendous sense of speed and a game that could last for months, Asphalt 8 is a truly awesome racing game that despite its ‘pay to win’ reminders has to be one of the best racing games on a tablet device. For only 69p its well worth a try if only for the Mini racing around London.

The Android app store is packed full of a myriad of excellent games, many of which are made by Indian developers. As the Indian market is a huge user base, it’s logical that a number of games would favor this area. The following five games are Indian-inspired Android games that great fun to play even if you have no idea of the content.

chennai-express

Chennai Express

Based on an Indian blockbuster known as Shah Rukh Khan, Chennai Express is inspired by the hugely successful Temple Run. Packed with an Indian flavor, the game features Indianized obstacles and characters. The running game is all about the main character, Rahul, who embarks on a real running adventure. On your way to a high-score you’ll stumble upon various obstacles such as cars, coconut carts, trucks, buses, and more. Just like Temple Run, Chennai Express also has some pretty great power-ups such as magical urns to bring you back to life if you die, and bikes to boost speed.

Little-G-One-Adventures

Little G One Adventures

Little G One Adventures is a pretty fun Indian version of the acclaimed Ninjump game. Regarded as India’s all-time favorite, it will certainly exceed your expectations; inspired from a well-known movie known as Ra One, Little G One Adventures is all about the hero of the game, namely G One. Earn points by hoping on a quest to gather Blue Orbs and benefit from an excellent experience. You might have it easy at first, but as you advance in the game you’ll have to pass by various obstacles such as missiles and grenades. As a player you’ll come across some really fun powers-up such thruster boosts, spring and rocket boards, and additional power boosts to keep you flying.

chhota-bheem

Chota Bheem Mice Mayhem Lite

Chota Bheem is famous among kids who love Pogo – an entertaining channel for kids. To make things even more engaging, Pogo launched Chota Bheem on Android, and thus everyone can benefit from a game where the star is Bheem, a super boy in love with sweets. The Indian twist of the game comes when Bheem must protect his village, and he will go to extreme lengths to do that. In the Android-powered game, Kalia is the rival of Bheem; he will release a couple of mice that are threatening the sweet shop. What your job? To save the sweets and eliminate the mice and you’ll have 12 levels available to do that.

hitout-heroes

Hitout Heroes

Hitout resembles Home Run Battle where the player is a baseball batter. Your job would be to hit the ball using angle and timing precision to reach a high score. Hitout has that Indian allure you’ll surely grow fond of; the games features 10 characters that are unique, including a cricket and a hockey player. Use the cool in-game upgrades to super power your character and get ready to enjoy hours of genuine entertainment with Hitout Heroes. After you’ve gained enough experience, feel free to test the challenge mode where your job is to top up a score in a 30-ball match.

rescube

Rescube

Based on the famous Indian movie Koi Mil Gaya, Rescube is an Android game where you’ll have to rescue an alien and take it back to the mother ship. Yet, to reach your goal you’ll have to get out of various engaging mazes. Simply put, it’s a puzzle game and your job is to move items that are getting in your alien’s way. It’s not as simple as it sounds; with each level you pass the difficulty increases, so you might want to prepare yourself for a challenging experience.

So there you have it, five games of Indian origin that will help you spice up your game variety and allow a little Indian-inspired gaming into your world.

I know you are there. I know you can hear me. You must help us. We must control it, or it will control us. Don’t trust anyone. Look, they aren’t coming – they are already here.

Ingress, the near real-time game created by Niantic Labs has people taking sides in a battle that takes place all over the world. Not a gaming world – but in your world.

According to Ingress, the world has been seeded with an “Exotic Matter,” or XM, by some unknown force called the Shapers. No one knows who or what these Shapers are. But there are those who support the shapers, called the Enlightened. Those who oppose these unknown forces are called the resistance. You are invited to join either side, via your Android device. The game uses your phone’s GPS system to locate and track you. As you travel through your world, the game offers you opportunities to attack portals from the other side, pick up supplies, and other actions.

ingress game 1

The makers of the game have created portals around the world, usually using landmarks that appear on the map to those who are using the app on their device. The portals are blue, green, or gray, depending on who controls them. It offers each player to take action depending on which side they are on, with the goal of creating virtual triangular fields. The battle lines are drawn, as both sides battle for what they believe in.

Ingress was originally launched in an online campaign in November of 2012 and has about 500,000 players globally. The story has been slowly revealed through a variety of videos, online messages, and other releases. While the makers thought it would be interesting to bring gaming to the next level by making it interactive with the real world. They never expected it to have the effect it has had. People are forming groups, clubs and teams, working together and even declaring truces. Boston.com reported on a ceasefire at MIT as well as an Ingress memorial set up between the fighting factions in honor of slain officer, Sean Collier.

ingress game 2

Philipp Greitsch on Trendblog.net reported that while Ingress may seem like just another video game, with leveling up and getting items there is a big difference. Players are forced to change their lives. They have to do more than simply sit on the couch to play. It offers the opportunity to meet new people and explore your world around you, as well as see some of the important landmarks in your community. That’s a step up from the Wii, Kinect, or Move, that never get you out the door.

With the popularity of such mobile devices as the Galaxy S4 at T Mobile, social geo games may become more common. As these devices increase in power and ability, the gaming options available will increase as well. But for now, the fate of the world is resting in your hands. To join, go to Ingress.com and join the battle. The most difficult question is will you embrace the enlightenment? Or will you join the resistance?

I’ll be the first to admit that I am an Apple fanboy and having been caught up in all the hype over the past few years I own pretty much every product Apple have ever released. However, being a avid gamer and keen amateur game developer I wanted to see what all the fuss was over the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1). My friends had raved about them and those with more tech know-how than I said that from a technical standpoint it was a superior machine. As Android is now the market leader and game developers flocking to the growing market, I wanted to see what this new tablet would be like from gamers perspective and below are my initial findings.

 white-samsung-galaxy-tab-2

The Arrival

When I finally took delivery of my shiny white Galaxy Tab from Argos I couldn’t have been more excited. A second tablet in the house meant I could build games for Android tablets, stop stealing the family iPad for work and have another computer for my young girls. This final point means that the girls have individual screens in the car allowing them to watch different movies and play different games…  meaning more peace for me.

The weight feels slightly lighter than the iPad and the screen has a silky smooth finish that is a joy to caress. The front mounted speakers look to be ideal for gaming and definitely gives it the impression that it is an entertainment system first and foremost. I soon set about downloading all my games, apps and entertainment, that were divided into ‘games for toddlers’, ‘games for me’, ‘essential apps’ and finally movies and music. My first day downloads consisted of:

 new-samsung-1

Android Games For Toddlers

My top choices for toddler games for Android was a mix of both paid and free games:

 cbeebies-playtime

Cbeebies Playtime (free):

A well rounded and well made game with four game types to keep the girls occupied. This is a great starter app that is lots of fun, but with all the characters CBeebies has on their roster, I would like to see updates that extend the app further to include people like Charlie and Lola, Mr Maker and Old Jacks Boat.

 talking-friends

Talking Tom, Talking Ben and Talking Ginger (free)

The girls love those crazy animals and happily jabber to them for minutes on end. The Ginger the Cat game also has a really useful toothbrush timer that my girls use daily. Sadly, they don’t measure up to their iPad counterparts as they glitchy and less responsive.

 puzzingo

Puzzingo (free)

Puzzingo is a basic drag and drop puzzle game that uses silhouettes instead of jigsaw pieces making it much easier for toddlers. Its also crammed full of sound FX and mini games meaning it will keep them busy on long car journeys. It’s worth paying the extra to unlock additional puzzles as this one keeps the girls busy for hours (whilst being educational of course).

 pet-spa

Pet Spa (free)

Grooming cute little animals takes time and despite its simple gameplay and limited appeal, Lucy, my eldest enjoys washing, clipping and dressing up various animals and showing me the finished critter.

 princess-puzzles

Princess Jigsaw (free)

I was a bit dubious at first as it doesn’t look like a licenced product but I thought I’d give it a try and whilst it works ok, I don’t see it lasting.

 pepper-pig

Peppa Pig Goes On Holiday (Paid)

A selection of mini games around a holiday/vacation theme that the girls pointed to and requested… Obviously I caved within minutes. Whilst the app is solid and the games are fun, I can’t help but think that at £2.99/$4.99 they could have bundled in a few of the other titles as well.

Android Games For Me

I wanted a mix of pick-up-and-play games and some more long term games so I opted for the following:

 rayman-jungle-run

Rayman Jungle Run (paid)

After enjoying Rayman legends and hearing good things about this simple runner I was eager to test out my new hardware of this speedy platformer. I was not disappointed, as the game is simple, smooth and fun. Each stage is beautifully crafted for a seamless running experience and the areas are geared around teaching you new skills. The music is fun and bouncy, however, with only three different tracks I can see this getting repetitive. The Samsung renders it amazingly and it runs with no lag or load times.

 asphalt-8

Asphalt 8 (paid)

A hefty 1.3GB download but pushes my new Tablet to the maximum. With a detailed career mode and plenty of unlockables I had hoped this game would last the foreseeable future. A week in and I am 10 tracks in and still thoroughly enjoying it. Sadly, I am still in the original car as the decent cars cost a huge amount of in game cash (encouraging you to buy supercar packs for real money).

 temple-run-2

Temple Run 2 (free)

This addictive swipe-fest greatly improves on the original and on a 10.1 inch screen it looks fantastic. The game runs smoothly and is ideal for a quick romp through the jungle. Out of all the games I initially downloaded, I have played this the least due to it lack of any real story or progression elements.

 jane-wilde

Jane Wilde (free)

This Zombieville USA style run-and-gun game has a great art style and plenty of weapons to keep any ‘older’ gamer happy. Obviously targeting a male audience (due to her large assets) this games is a simple pick-up-and-play title that is easy to dip in and out off when you have a spare minute or two.

 gta3

Grand Theft Auto 3 (paid)

The 10th anniversary edition of the game that spawned one of the biggest franchises in gaming history. This game has monopolised most of my time as it is as addictive as the original.  The controls might be a little ‘shonkier’ which can get you into trouble in the sections you need some degree of accuracy, but for the most part, the game is very similar to its playstation counterpart.

Some confusion

Being new to the Android scene I did experience some confusion between the Samsung store and the Google store as I want games and movies but was presented with options from both with no clear difference as to the benefits of one or the other (Wreck it Ralph was £9.99 on both stores). Although iPad is a gated community it does benefit by everything being simple.

Its SO big!

Over the past week I have become precious about by new gadget and I am astonished by the possibilities. Knowing that it will be used by my rambunctious children as well as myself (and the fact my iPad is cracked and always ‘sticky’) I went for 3 years gadget cover to keep it good condition. I have subsequently got a cover and added a 64gb SD card increasing its storage. Now it has a wealth of music, movies, games, and a mass of apps to connect me with friends, shop online and work. I still have lots of personalisation to do and I probably will remove a few of the standard apps, once I figure out if I need them or not. Overall though, it has been a pleasurable experience and I look forward to playing, reviewing and making new games for my new device and at nearly half the price of a new iPad 3 I can see it swaying a lot of people in the future.

The Android operating system has seen its fair share of excellent releases this summer. Much to the delight of mobile gamers, July has seen a wealth of games in a variety of genres that are sure to satisfy the tastes of most mobile gamers. The quality hasn’t been of a low standard either! In fact, many of the games herein are award-winning titles that have the subject of critical acclaim well into the current month of August. So, what are some of the games that mobile gamers need to be on the lookout for?

true-axis-skate

True Skate (True Axis)

One of the most highly anticipated ports from the iOS (iPad, iPhone) is True Skate. This game has been on the back burner for quite some time and it’s been nearly a year since it was released for Apple devices. However, the wait for Android gamers finally came to an end in July when this best-seller was ported to the Android. It requires players to navigate a skateboarder through a generic skate park while performing tricks. Tactile sensitivity is the name of the game here as players will need to be quite precise with their maneuvers. It’s certainly one of the best simulations to date on the Android and indeed the iOS. It’s sure to please those who are interested in this type of game, too.

the-respawnables

Respawnables (Digital Legends)

The idea of playing a shooter on a mobile device doesn’t seem to go together, but this is exactly the idea that Digital Legends is trying to do away with. Respawnables takes the charm of other hotly played video games for the personal computer, namely Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield Heroes, and aims to bring it into the mobile world. While it’s free to play, players often comment that purchasing the in-app items are crucial to their own success, which is quite common in the shooter world. However, players needn’t feel restricted or obligated in any way. It’s perfectly feasible for players to gun their way through this game without any additional items.

rush-poker

Rush Poker (Full Tilt Poker)

Rush poker is a relatively new concept in the online poker world. Instead of sitting idle after folding while the rest of the table plays its hand, players are immediately taken to a new table and a new set of opponents to play a fresh hand. There’s no waiting involved and this suits those with fast-paced requirements particularly well. It’s also seen as complementary to mobile devices, where players might not have the time to play a more involved game of poker and might only be passing a few moments while commuting or during a break.

Poker isn’t something that’s well-engrained in the mobile world, but Rush Poker seems to be paving the way to become the most well-played poker application. It is currently available for the iOS 4.0 and above. An Android version is rumored to be in the works, but as of yet it hasn’t been officially released or announced.
