The PlayStation console has enjoyed decades of popularity, and with the continued improvements, adaptation, and various graphical improvements, we have seen some truly spectacular game releases.

From GTA to FIFA, let’s take a look at some of the unrivaled games that have contributed to its place in millions of gamers’ homes, and still continue to do so in 2021.

COD-cold-war

Call of Duty

In 2003, Call of Duty came to our consoles, and since then a whopping 23 more games have been released.

Originating with the debut “Call of Duty”, it has now developed in the latest edition, Black Ops Cold War.

COD is an especially popular game as it provides engrossing first-person action following an in-depth story that simulates the infantry and combined arms warfare of World War II. Call of Duty is a game that rivals success as it features a real-life based storyline that contains twists and turns, with a continued purpose that helps engross the player.

The series is also especially popular as it is a simple “pick up and play” game, featured with competitive streaks and fast-paced gameplay.

If you have not entered the world of Call of Duty, then you are missing out. Simply seeing the modernisation and technical details of the game from 2003 to now, is simply astonishing.

GTA5

Grand Theft Auto 5

Who doesn’t love GTA?

Not only does the latest edition offer its compelling story mode, but the online feature allows you to play with fellow gamers, and enthralls the concept of the game, whilst being your own unique player.

GTA has certainly come a long way, from the game series originating in 1997. It is safe to say it has improved since the days of San Andreas and Liberty City.

In 2021, we focus on the success of Grand Theft Auto 5, which to many is astonishing to hear it was released over 7 years ago, and yet this edition is still one of the most played games for both online and offline.

As we reach further down the GTA timeline, we are all eagerly awaiting the release of GTA 6, but in classic Rockstar games fashion, they are keeping it tucked away until the day finally arrives.

LEGO

You heard that right, the LEGO series is still a collection to watch out for.

LEGO is most certainly coming back, and it has every right to do so. Since its first release in 1997, they have released a further 68 games that have taken the virtual world by storm.

The simplicity of LEGO games is one of the main contributors to its success, and the collaborations they have made with world-famous characters. From Harry Potter to Marvel, there’s a LEGO game to suit everyone. Each and every game is ideal for both single and multiple players gaming and a fantastic choice for families.

For any LEGO fanatics out there, if you have not explored the virtual LEGO world, then you need to make it happen. Each game will ensure smooth and simple gameplay.

FIFA

Amazingly, FIFA was introduced in 1995, but many gamers may have only seen the major success of this game around a decade ago.

Without a doubt, FIFA was one of the first games to fully introduce prolific quality graphics. But from just a 5 year period, everyone can see the sheer dedication and hard work that has been put in to achieve the level of quality they are offering.

Moving onto FIFA 21, the players are almost real to the naked eye, due to the lighting effects and facial adaptations. Also, specifically with FIFA 21, it has been said the performance is noticeably better and gameplay is better than ever.

As football is one of the most popular global sports to exist, that alone was one of the contributing factors to the success of the FIFA series. However, we continue to see unrivaled quality go into each and every copy, with even professional football clubs such as Manchester City hiring professionals to represent them.

far-cry-3

Far Cry

Far Cry is a game that has added a different dimension to the gaming industry, as its tribe-themed storylines and grippingly intense storytelling partner together to create compelling gameplay experiences.

Ubisoft brought out the first edition of Far Cry in 2004, and since then the game has been deemed to be one of the most popular FPS franchises in the gaming industry,

The main success revolves around their most recent release in 2019 with New Dawn, but many gamers are now excited for the release of the new main series game which is expected to be released in October. Far Cry 6 is said to be “the largest Far Cry playground to date” and “a tropical paradise frozen in time”.

But above all else, Far Cry 6 allows you to recruit a pet to work alongside you, including a Dachshund named Chorizo.

battlefield-V

Battlefield V

Battlefield V offers difficulty levels and compelling stand-alone story missions.

This award-winning gaming franchise was first released back in 2002, with Battlefield V being its latest release in 2018.

Battlefield V has gone from strength to strength in this almost three-year time frame due to its intensely gripping storyline. Set in WW2, Battlefield V offers immersive gameplay that provides both single and multiplayer story functions, but the main success with the story is how they have created their new, immersive portrayal of WW2.

We continue to see brand-new games dominate the gaming world, but what do you think will feature the list in 2022?

We all love to play video games. However, when it comes to emulating them and making the needed setting, it can be quite confusing. We do not know all the terms and it is enough to make us feel stuck. So, let’s see what we call pcsx2 bios files and what are their main functions.

What is a BIOS?

BIOS is the shortcut of the Basic Input Output System. In fact, it is special hardware for your computer. It is the first thing your PC reads in and runs once you turn it on. The BIOS files to test and initialize all the devices on your laptop. They enable your computer system to work in full measure. BIOS files can check the principal settings, initialize devices, and check whether everything functions correctly and smoothly for you to have the best experience.

Now, you know the general explanation of BIOS, and next, we will see why we need PSX BIOS and emulators when we want to run PlayStation games.

PlayStation Emulator For PCs and Mobile Devices

Do you consider yourself to be one of those devoted PlayStation fans? If you really love video games, you should get a better version of a typical PlayStation console. Nowadays, we all have access to modern technologies. They make it possible to play classic retro games which we have already forgotten. So, if you want to play the games from your childhood, you just need to find the ROMs like:

  • Pokemon,
  • Donkey Kong Country,
  • Super Mario,
  • Aladdin,
  • Kirby Super Star,
  • Super Bomberman,
  • Sunset Riders,
  • Super Metroid,
  • The Legend of Zelda.

Also, you will need to install an emulator, a PlayStation BIOS, and a ROM. Usually, it is not a problem to find emulating software and game ROMs, but some issues can be caused by a PlayStation BIOS. You have to download an important component called BIOS file to make your downloaded emulator work correctly. It can be compared to the lock and the key. It is impossible to run a PlayStation emulator without a BIOS file. That is why we recommend you check whether your downloaded PS emulator contains a BIOS file, otherwise, you will have to download it separately. Also, it is important to download the right BIOS file. If you find the wrong BIOS, the system will show an error like “No BIOS found.” You just have to download another type of BIOS for a concrete PlayStation emulator. We recommend you join the community of video gamers where it is easier for information concerning different types of BIOS files. It often happens that gamers exchange such files with each other for free to keep the spirit of gaming.

Do not think that the entire process of emulating games and installing BIOS files is difficult. It just seems to be complicated but in fact very easy and fast. Make sure that you find the right files. Once you have installed your PlayStation emulator, you are on the way to the 90-s when the most popular entertainment among children, teenagers, and even adults was playing video games. The good news is that you do not need to purchase a physical video game or console. You just need to have a computer or a smartphone to enjoy retro games.

How to Use PS2 BIOS for the PCSX2

  1. Start with downloading and installing the PCSX2 emulator on your PC.
  1. Open the program.
  2. Press the “Config” button on the main window.
  3. Click the “Configuration” button on the appeared context menu to activate the configuration window.
  4. Press the “Set Bios Directory” button to open a new window.
  5. Your BIOS file has to be located on your computer. Press the BIOS file (it must have the “.bin” extension).
  6. Press “OK” on the bottom to use the PS2 BIOS file with the PCSX2 emulator.

Conclusion

We hope now the word BIOS does not scare you. You know what to do to run your favorite PlayStation 2 games on your device. Use trustworthy resources for downloading BIOS files, emulators, and ROMs to stay away from the potential risk of getting a virus or annoying spam.

A BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) file is a type of firmware that is used to start a computer’s operating system when it is turned on. The BIOS file is stored on a chip on the motherboard and is used to initialize the hardware and load the operating system. It contains instructions that tell the computer how to perform basic functions such as booting up, displaying text on the screen, and interacting with input devices such as the keyboard and mouse.

The BIOS file is responsible for performing a number of tasks when the computer is first turned on, including:

  • Checking and initializing the hardware components of the computer, such as the processor, memory, and storage devices.
  • Loading the bootloader, which is a program that is responsible for loading the operating system.
  • Displaying a splash screen or logo on the screen as the computer is starting up.

In some cases, you may need to update the BIOS file in order to fix a bug or add support for new hardware. Jotun is a visually stunning game that occasionally took my breath away the few times it zoomed out and showed an extensive view of the beautifully drawn landscapes. Jotun is a game based on Norse mythology and it is a very welcome change to the saturation of Greek mythology in gaming today. The 2.5D isometric view and the stunning hand-drawn graphics are a wonderful compliment to the gripping story that Thora, the main character, tells as you journey the branches of Yggdrasil, the massive tree that connects the different worlds of Norse mythology. As wonderful as these particular aspects are, I couldn’t help but feel like there were a aspects missing, from no “you are here” indication on the maps to the less than stellar combat.

jotun-ps4-2

After suffering a less than glorious death, Thora is tasked with trying to impress the gods in order to enter the heavenly Valhalla which is the ultimate achievement for a Viking warrior. She must traverse the branches of Yggdrasil and defeat Jotun, elemental giants, in order to impress the gods. In doing so Odin will allow her inglorious death to be forgiven and allow entrance into paradise.

There are five areas to explore and each has its own elemental aspects. There is Niflheim the ice world, Muspelheim the fire world, etc. Each area has two sections and a boss and instead of each section crawling with enemies similar to games like Gauntlet, the sections are primarily exploration-based with a few puzzles thrown into the mix. Jotun is a game that is best viewed without a hundred enemies attacking so I believe this was a design idea that Lotus Games had in mind from the beginning. The vibrant colors and stunning drawn graphics leave you wanting to see every nook and cranny of the world that they so carefully crafted. In each section, you are supposed to find a rune and after collecting both runes of an area the gate to the boss is opened. The boss fights are all very fun and engaging, even if it seems like the battle system was a second thought to the exploration of the preceding areas. Thora has her axe and swings it rather slowly which is fine throughout most of the game when you are breaking objects in the worlds but makes the boss fights a little more tedious than they needed to be. Speaking of the bosses, each Jotun is enormous and really shows the grandeur of the elemental giants in comparison to tiny Thora. The feeling of toppling each fight gives a real sense like you have just overcome staggering odds.

jotun-ps4-3

The fighting is still fun, if not a little slow, but the gripe is in the map system. The map of an area is available on the pause screen but there is no indication of where the player is on the map. It leaves you confused and wondering where to go and where you have been: on the plus side, each area is fairly short so even with the confusing map system; the areas do not take very long to complete. In addition to the map screen issues, there is no inventory screen to keep track of your collection of powers given to you by the gods or the Ithunn apples which are scattered throughout each area and lengthen your life bar. It would be nice to be able to see which powers you have collected (because some powers are given multiple times and others are not), all of the runes you have collected, and how many apples out of the total amount in the game on an inventory screen.

Upon finishing an area in the void of space known as Ginnungagap, the player becomes privy to more information about Thora. The short but gripping story is enough to keep anyone captivated for the roughly ten-hour journey through Jotun. Each time I completed a Jotun fight, I could not wait to hear more about the interesting story of Thora, not to mention the narration is all given in Icelandic which gives the perfect atmosphere to the already beautiful scenery. Keeping with a closely related language to Norse helps really engulf the player in the story of Thora.

Jotun is a fun exploration based game with stunning graphics and a fun and unique boss fights. The combat is slow but responsive and leaves the challenge of the game in the Jotun encounters. The exploration is fun and not too difficult even though the maps could have used an indicator. All in all, Jotun is a very fun game that gives a good intro level mix of fiction and mythology. The story is well written and the language choice could not have been better. Minus the few minor gripes, Jotun plays well and left me wanting to explore more wonderfully drawn landscapes.

Furi is a fast paced, action packed fighting game that switches from far range combat accompanied with a twin-stick shooter aspect to close quarters combat during each fight. The swift nature of the gameplay is a welcome distraction to the odd and less than compelling story that it tries to convey.

Furi is a boss-rush game similar to Shadow of the Colossus, but lacking the freedom to roam and search for the bosses on your own. You are an unnamed and unspeaking character with a sword and a laser pistol that is fighting to free yourself from the clutches of the guardians that have imprisoned you. You are guided by a rabbit masked man with a staff that narrates your journey in between fights. The story is very straightforward: escape imprisonment and kill all that stand in your way.

furi-PS4

The gameplay is very simple. You are pitted against several different guardians in arena style fights.  You can attack, dodge, shoot, parry, and charge attacks. With such a limited control scheme, you may think that the gameplay lacks stimulation, but that is far from the truth. Furi utilizes its simple mechanics in a blissful combination with high octane movement, extremely vibrant colors and graphics, and an awesome soundtrack that is just as upbeat as the gameplay. The fighting is easy to pick up within 15-20 minutes of starting the game, but perfecting your parry timing and your charged attacks will take much longer. Each boss is unique and contains his or her own challenges to overcome: The Scale is a speedy reptilian boss that makes up for his lack of strength by his tremendous speed, The Hand is a heavily armored knight that is just the opposite of the Scale; he is slow and cumbersome, but if he makes contact, it is going to hurt, or The Edge which is a boss that looks similar to you but packs a punch and is speedy as all hell. Without going into any more detail, as to leave this review spoiler free, the bosses are all fun and unique. Each boss has several stages and most stages contain a long range and a close quarters fight. Your health replenishes after you defeat a stage of a boss and you are rewarded with an extra life upon completion of a stage. You start with three lives and once those three run out, if you have not acquired any extras, you must restart the boss from the beginning. This leads to trial and error situation which is not as commonly found in games today, but increases the satisfaction when finally learning and overcoming your foe.

furi-PS4

When  I first heard of Furi, I was told it was in the genre of Souls-Borne games, but had a hard time believing it because of the pace and the neon color scheme, but as I continued to play the game, I began feeling the same satisfaction when beating a boss as I had when playing through a Souls-Borne game. Learning patterns, parrying at the right time, knowing when to charge an attack or dodge the hell out of the way, or figuring out how to acquire extra health orbs during certain stages all lends to the immense satisfaction when finally seeing that short but sweet cut-scene of your character killing your foe.

All in all, Furi is a very fun and addicting fast-paced game that mixes close range combat mechanics with twin-stick shooting mechanics. It is full of vivid color and the graphics are similar to cel-shaded anime style graphics which pairs perfectly with the swift gameplay and rapid upbeat soundtrack. Although the story is nothing to write home about, the unique bosses and extreme satisfaction of learning and defeating your opponent make this a worthwhile pick up for anyone who is ready for a decent challenge.

The Best Emulator

Many classic games first appeared on the PlayStation; Wipeout, Tony Hawk Skateboarding, Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot all made their debut on the console.  The huge variety of genres, from sport titles to horror games, made people addicted to this little box. Some of them have reached the status of classics, but unfortunately these days playing them is harder than you think. However, with the help of modern technologies, the gaming industry can return you back in time and let you enjoy again those feelings, with emulators available for Windows, Linux and Android. Christmas is a fantastic time to catch up on all those titles that have stacked up during the fall rush. Add to that, all the games you bought in the Black Friday sale and you probably need a holiday just to play through all those huge games. This year, I bring you a selection of new releases, games you missed have missed, and some mobile choices, so that you can enjoy this holiday season playing amazing games, no matter where in the country you are.

New Releases, Just For You

Just in case you haven’t bought enough during November, December has some of its own big hitters, eager to make a dent on your wallet.

last-guardian

The Last Guardian | PS4

The long-awaited game The Last Guardian will finally be released on December 6th, with a retail price of $59.99. The story involves a young boy and his friend Trico, who inevitably reminds us of a feathered version of the dragon Falkor in the film “Never-Ending Story.” The game has been under development since 2007 – it even went from PlayStation 3 to PS4 – so almost 10 years later we can finally enjoy Fumito Ueda’s (head of the Japanese video game development team ICO) grand adventure.

The Last Guardian certainly exceeds many other games at least in the storyline and the magnificent settings where it takes place. It’s a great gift idea for the gamer in your life, as well to play yourself, this Christmas, because to put players in a merry spirit, The Last Guardian emphasizes themes like friendship and courage.

final-fantasy

Final Fantasy 15 | Xbox One

The story follows the road trip on Prince Noctis and his friends as he travels across the country to wed his fiancée Luna. Suddenly, the news reports that his homeland has been invaded and taken over and that he, his loved one and his father King Regis, have been slain at the hands of the enemy.

This epic journey is said to take almost 50 hours to complete to should you want ride out the winter chill, this will keep you busy for some time.

The Walking Dead Season 3 | Multi-platform

Take control of your favourite characters and try to protect friends and family from the zombie hordes, and maybe even play as the zombies for a change of pace. In between meals and the festive atmosphere, The Walking Dead: Season Three is an entertaining alternative, as you battle walkers and travel through the wreckage of an apocalyptic world.

Party Games for the Party Season

Christmas is a time for friends and family, so why not share your love of gaming and get social this Christmas. Mario Kart is a staple in our house but there is a range of games that can be played on the sofa or over the internet.

lego-jurrassic-world

The play style is easy to pick up and the constant reward system means that if you play for five minutes or five hours you are sure to unlock a treasure trove of extra characters, levels and extras.

pure-hold-em

Pure Hold’em

For a more adult gaming experience, you could always try a spot of Poker on VooFoo Studios Pure Hold’em on Xbox One. Their previous games of Pure Chess and Pure Pool are exceptionally polished, boasting stunning visuals, smooth animations and a little bit of jazz. You only need to look around the mahogany tables with their expensive baize and injection-moulded chips, to see that Pure Hold’em continues this tradition of lovingly rendered, pin-sharp visuals. Sadly, you can’t win any real money.

Should you want to have a real flutter this Christmas then you either need a full poker set up on your kitchen table or grab your phone or tablet and head to Pokerstars Casino. The app includes classic casino games like blackjack, roulette, and of course, James Bond’s favourite game of baccarat. Available via free mobile app, which works on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices, PokerStars Casino offers seamless graphics and no bugs, plus you can take it with you anywhere you go this holiday season. After all, nothing beats beating the dealer for a big pot while you wait for your significant other to finish their shopping.

Games on the go

November saw a slew of games hit the app store, meaning you can be gaming if you are travelling, hiding in the toilet or simply relaxing in front of ‘The Great Escape’ on TV. Here are just three titles for you to enjoy this Christmas:

steamworld-heist

SteamWorld Heist | iOS

SteamWorld Heist an outstanding strategy game from Swedish game studio Image & Form. The game has been out on a number of platforms already and has finally made the jump to iOS. SteamWorld Heist follows the adventure of Captain Piper Faraday, the leader of a ragtag band of space pirates. This side scrolling strategy game was designed for 3DS so it no wonder it works so well on mobile phones.

BATMAN – The Telltale Series | iOS

BATMAN – The Telltale Series is an episodic point-and-click graphic adventure game based on Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s Batman comic book series. The game is set a number years after Wayne has become Batman, meaning the narrative has some flexibility in terms of enemies and stories without disturbing any of the previous versions of Batman already established. The Telltale games are great to play on mobile, as they tell fantastic stories and involve little engagement, so they can be enjoyed as you let your christmas dinner settle or when you are travelling across the country.

Super Mario Run

The last choice on the list, falling somewhere between a classic option and a new release. Super Mario Run is perfect for all audiences and age groups, because it will transport you back to the days of Christmas past. Priced at less than $10 already, a slimmed down free version of the game, will also be released on December 15th.

In this update of the legendary Nintendo title, Mario does what he does best: running through a course, jumping over obstacles and avoiding enemies. It also includes an additional multiplayer option, so you can compete against siblings, cousins, and parents – reviving the good old days when Super Mario and his pals were Christmas morning musts.

No matter which games you choose this Christmas, whether going for the newly released options, challenging yourself with more classic games, or somewhere in between, just remember to enjoy this holiday as much as you can, cause it only comes once a year!

This week, my retro senses were tingling when I saw the upcoming game ‘Super Dungeon Bros’ coming out on Xbox One on November 1st. This cute action dungeon crawler looks like a mix of Castle Crashers, Gauntlet and Diablo which is no bad thing.

The trailer and images look highly polished and loads of fun with humour akin to the recent lego games. Being a PEGI 7 rating, means this might be a good one for the kids as well. The four player co-op focused gameplay and all-rock soundtrack have definitely peaked my interest.

Super Dungeon Bros is also planning to have cross-platform playability post launch which is always something to support.

FromSoftware is set to unleash the action filled ‘Dark Souls 3’ later this month for PS4, Xbox One and PC players. The game which continues from its 2014 predecessor will closely follow the look and feel of the previous instalment with all the added bonus of new features such as the Ready Stance combat element, improved weapons and a host of new maps and levels for players to explore.

The fantasy genre itself is enjoying a boom of late mostly thanks to the countless adaptations, movies, TV shows, books and even online casino themed games such as the ones at wintingo.com that have emerged. Leading the way in the fantasy-casino crossover world is Immortal Romance slot in a ‘dark take of love and intrigue’. With the Warcraft movie on the horizon, the world is ready for more fantasy.

dark-souls-3-2

‘Dark Souls 3’ is the latest effort courtesy of FromSoftware and despite rumours that this could be the last chapter in the series there are indeed plans to continue the story after this 4th entry which is hopefully set to become a turning point for both the franchise and the studio.

The latest instalment will land in Japan this month whilst those in Europe will have to wait until the middle of April to get their hands on a copy. With the classic magic meter back in place allowing you to pick up magic points and perform various spells and miracles the game has been expanded and improved upon in many areas of gameplay.

dark-souls-3-3

The storyline may not be the most intelligently conceived and we’ve most certainly seen ones a little more coherently presented in other role-playing games in the past but some of the newer gaming mechanics on show here are impressive and immersive enough for players to get involved in the brutality and bloodshed on show. Sadly however there does seem to be quite a few areas of noticeable sluggishness which does make some of the more graphic intense sequences such as the end of level battles all the more frustrating.

As already mentioned there are new combat features in ‘Dark Souls 3’ and thankfully these for the most part are quick and fluid and are vastly superior to that featured in previous games. However like most of the games in the ‘Dark Souls’ franchise they definitely require a certain level of patience particularly when it comes to repeatedly getting killed. The whole game is a learning curve and the more you progress the more you learn about the best way to battle it out and more importantly how to survive.

The sense of speed in Race The Sun is phenomenal. As the greyscale blocks, towers and spheres wizz by at brake neck speed, you feel lucky that they didn’t have your name on. Smashing into the objects that litter your journey home, really excentuates the fast paced gameplay. Race The Sun by Flippfly tells the age old tale of a solar powered aircraft a long way from home at sunset. As the sun sets on the horizon, time is of the essence and you put the pedal to the metal, in order to get as close to home as possible. There are a number of different orbs to collect that all have various properties. The blue triangles increase your score multiplier, the green stars give you a jump ability, for when you have no time to go around a looming obstacle, and yellow balls give you more time by forcing the plunging sun higher into the evening sky.

race-the-sun

The mix of simple graphics, simple rules and polished gameplay really set this apart from other first person endless runners. The array of tasks and achievements to complete as you race across the grey dessert, keep you interested and the global rank means getting those all important score multipliers is key to being the best.

Your solar ship can also be upgraded before each game with such additions as magnets (for collecting orbs easier) to additional jump slots for those hairier moments.

race-the-sun

The game is similar to Into The Dead in many respects, as that sees you race you zombie obstacles instead of towers. However, Race The Sun is devoid of weaponry and adverts and is much faster. Weirdly, it reminded me of an open world Outrun. You race your vehicle as fast as you can trying to get to the next checkpoint/region. When reached in Outrun you get a momentary rest bite as you choose a direction and turn a corner. In Race The Sun, you have a similar rest at the end of each region and a polygon bird delivers you lots of multiplier orbs and the all important time orb allowing you to race on.

race-the-sun

Overall, the game is fantastic and gives the player a real sense of speed. The visuals are unique and the gameplay solid. Sadly, it’s a lot more expensive than its competition at £3.99, but there are no adverts to break up the play. The game definitely has a pick up and play vibe and you will find yourself playing it in short bursts as there is no real storyline or narrative to follow. However, with lots of achiements, collectibles and the online leaderboard there is enough to keep you interested.

An inspired concept that is super fast fun and highly polished!

It’s been a good week for Resident Evil fans with Capcom confirming that they will be releasing a re-mastered version of the original Resident Evil game. The re-mastered game release will be available for PlayStation 3 and 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One and is set to launch digitally in early 2015.

Whilst another Resident Evil game has always been on the cards, the rumors of the re-release have been circulating for a while now, but Capcom has finally made the news official. At this time it seems like an odd choice for Capcom as Resident Evil 2 was the better story and Resident Evil 4 was ultimately the better game. Resident Evil 4 was recently remastered for the Xbox 360 so would be the natural choice for a remastered edition. After Resident Evil 4 the games generally went downhill as they focused on action over horror.

Resident-evil-1-HD-comparison

The upcoming release will feature 1080p visuals and 5.1 surround sound support for all new consoles and PC, and players will be able to choose between the classic 4:3 ratio and the 16:9 widescreen option. Classic R.E controls schemes will also be available, or players can opt for additional choices that are optimized for their platforms controller and the re-mastering promises smooth and seamless game play regardless. Other changes include a scrolling camera that will move away from the original fixed angles, and judging from the pre-release screenshots it seems that the game will favor a more dynamic approach.

In a press release from Capcom it was announced that the latest resolution enhancement and 3D model technology would be used during the re-mastering process, and that characters and backgrounds would come to life in greater detail. The games resolutions and textures have also been upgraded, making for a more terrifying and in-depth gaming experience on every platform.

I can only hope that this announcement is just a warm up announcement before the impending Resident Evil 8, or Resident Evil Reboot announcement coming soon

The original game was released for Sony PlayStation back in 1996 before it was ported to other platforms. However the 2015 game title will be a fully re-mastered version of the original 2002 GameCube release, which may frustrate some Wii users, as there is no reported Wii U version in the works.

A release date has yet to be confirmed but for now, early 2015 is good enough for us and the other R.E fans that also can’t wait to get their hands on the re-mastered version of the game.

There Came an Echo is a voice-controlled, squad-based strategy RPG that attempts to take advantage of the new Kinect sensor on the Xbox One. Created by California based Iridium Studios, There Came an Echo is the second title from the studio after Sequence, which is available now on Steam, GamersGate, and Xbox Live Indie Games.

Iridium Studios have released a gameplay video of the new War Room mode of There Came an Echo. Unlike the narratively complex campaign, the War Room lets players jump right into the action, experimenting with various weapons, voice commands, and tactics to defeat waves of enemies spiralling ever-higher in difficulty.

This video also represents the first extended look at actual gameplay within There Came an Echo, coming to Steam, PS4 and Xbox One. All voice commands contained therein were captured live and unedited. It represents a massive step forward for voice interfaces in games, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it to players all over the world.

Homefront: The Revolution is currently in development at Crytek UK and Deep Silver and looks to be an open world FPS set in Philadelphia. The city is under strict martial law and the events take place four years after the original Homefront game.

Deep Silver, who made the announcement added “Philadelphia – once the birthplace of Independence – has become a ghetto, where surveillance drones and armoured patrols keep the population at heel, crushing any dissent with savage force… Her once-proud citizens live in a police state, forced to collaborate just to survive, their dreams of freedom long since extinguished.

“But in the badlands of the Red Zone, in the bombed out streets and abandoned subways, a Resistance is forming. A guerrilla force, determined to fight for their freedoms despite overwhelming odds and ignite the second American Revolution.”

The single-player campaign will focus on the player being part of a Resistance Cell within a “living, breathing, open world [that] responds to your actions”. Through the players actions, they can start a rebellion on the streets and inspire oppressed civilians to take up the fight. Players use an array of tactics to hurt the oppressors such as ambush, infiltration and hit and run tactics to create amazing unscripted firefights. This focus on both stealth and mis-direction should make it different to the mainstream shooters.

The main protagonist, Ethan Brady, is said to be an average joe pushed to the edge by the occupation. He becomes involved in the resistance against the KPA who have advanced technology and firepower. The young resistance must scavenge for resources in order to fight back against the oppressors – using an array of home-made tools such as spare bullets and homemade explosive devices, all the way to remote controlled cars loaded with explosives.

The new game, set for release in 2015, will also include a four player multiplayer mode where you and three friends can form your own resistance cell with the aim to cause damage and destruction with the aim of becoming heroes of the resistance.

I am very excited about this one as I was a fan of the first game and a fan of the Red Dawn movies.

A job listing recently published on the TellTale website suggests that they are looking to their previous titles to next-generation consoles.

The listing starts by asking, “want to own our upcoming next-gen ports? Telltale Games is seeking an enthusiastic senior platform engineer to help us build out our next-generation platform technology for Xbox One and PS4 for upcoming IPs and our award-winning titles.”

job-listing

The use of the word ports suggests existing IPs and the fact they said “award winning” denotes The Walking Dead as it is Telltales biggest and most accredited project to date. As The Wolf Among Us currently halfway through series one, I would assume that this is another of the titles that Telltale is looking to port to PS4 and Xbox One.

I expect that the new games such as Borderlands and Game of Thrones will be out on next-gen but it’s interesting that they are looking to bring over their back catalog.

Telltale Projects Coming To PS4 & Xbox One According To Job Listing

Telltale games have yet to officially announce next generation versions of any of The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us, but this job listing does indicate that we will see some, if not all of Telltales back catalog appearing on PS4 and Xbox One at some point in the future.

This year’s GDC didn’t let us down as news of new games and new tech comes flooding out every day. Last night Sony unveiled their virtual reality headset named ‘Project Morpheus’.

Morpheus is a visor-style head-mounted unit that works in combination with the PlayStation Camera to deliver a VR experience. Inertial sensors are built into the head unit and the Camera, which the headset requires to work, tracks head orientation and movement so as the player’s head rotates the image of the virtual world rotates in real-time.

The Specs

Below are the current specifications of the prototype however, these were always subject to change:

  • Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
  • LCD Display
  • Panel Size: 5 inches
  • Panel Resolution: 1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
  • Field of View: 90 degrees
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
  • Connection interface: HDMI + USB
  • Function: 3D audio, Social Screen

Shuhei Yoshida from Sony Worldwide said,

“Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators.”

eve-valkarie

The Games

Sony ran a demo of the Morpheus with the space dogfighting game Eve Valkyrie (also coming out on Oculus Rift), Eidos Montreal’s Thief and a couple of internal creations: The Castle, which uses the Move controller, and The Deep, which lets you observe waters from inside a shark-proof cage.

We’ve been excited about the Oculus Rift for some time now but with the weight and screen expertise of Sony behind the Morpheus we are expecting good things in the future. Sadly, Sony couldn’t give any specifics on cost or release date only saying they were making it as affordable as possible and that it will be released as soon as possible… So no real hints there!

What are your thoughts on virtual reality, is it the next step in immersive gaming or just another gimmick and destined to sit by our guitar hero guitar and other unnecessary peripherals?

With a trickle of titles coming out for Xbox One and Playstation 4, and Titanfall firmly wedged in our consciousness gamers are looking beyond the next few months to see what other next generation titles are due for release.

Games such as Watchdogs, the Division, and Destiny all look fantastic and yet we have been so saturated in their PR, that we have become almost nonchalant about them.

evolve-2

Then along comes Evolve

Salvaged from the burning embers that was THQ, this up-coming co-op shooter looks truly stunning. The left-4-dead style adventure see the protagonists pitted against evolving alien creatures rather than hordes of the undead.

evolve-3

Whilst no solid background or narrative has been released the screenshots tell the tale of four human hunters each with classes reminiscent of Team Fortress; Assault, Support, Medic and the all new Trapper. As you would expect the different players have their roles and when said gargantuan alien is beaten down the Trapper can work his magic.

evolve-4

The players all come issued with Titanfall style jet packs in order to nimbly jump across the battlefield in their mission to clear the alien forest from the extraterrestrial threat. However, this is easier said than done. The aptly named Goliath is big, fast, breathes fire, can jump like a super hero. Should he be allowed to eat enough food (which is all over the forest), the creature evolves into an even more dangerous foe. Should this cycle continue you and your team of space hard nuts will soon be a monster aperitif. The Goliath is just one of the myriad of critters swarming the swamps and forests and each one will require you to work with your team mates less you all be monster bait.

evolve-5

Made by Turtle Rock Studios and Published by 2K Games we are expecting big things from this title when released in Q3 2014. Rumors also mention that Evolve pre-orders will offer players a free DLC character and Monster Expansion Pack.

The Sheffield born company is thrilled to see its award-winning Worms franchise appear on the next generation of consoles, having already appeared on well over twenty other platforms since its first game back in 1995.

Worms Battlegrounds will also be one of the very first titles to be self-published on the Xbox One under the ID@Xbox program.  As Team17 is one of the ambassadors of the initiative, budding developers will be watching with a keen eye how the process progresses, as well as look to Team17 for answers on how it all works. Xbox Live Arcade was notoriously difficult to publish for, so indie developers all over the world will be eager to hear what Team 17 has to say on the matter.

worms-battlegrounds-logo

As there will be no dedicated ‘indie section’ on the Xbox One developers are worried that they will need to jump through too many hoops before getting their creation online. Couple that with Microsoft’s exclusivity terms and conditions many developers may be put off.

Worms Battlegrounds is due for release in early 2014 and available for PS4 and Xbox One.

In a fantastic turn of events, rumors have surfaced to say that the next version (or expansion) of the toy and game crossover world Disney Infinity will feature characters from both the Marvel universe and the Star Wars Universe.

The original Disney Infinity had always had potential and whilst its reception was warm it was only ever one great expansion away from being awesome. It looks like that expansion might be on its way.

The Wall Street Journal discovered (via All Games Beta) that Star Wars and Marvel versions of Disney Infinity were in development. At the same time, a job opening for an Infinity developer appeared mentioning Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U experience.

Disney Infinity is trying to emulate the success of  Skylanders and having a plethora of characters and licenses to draw on it makes sense to give this concept more attention. The original starter pack that launched last September contained Sully from Monsters Inc, Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of the Caribbean, and Mr Incredible from The Incredibles. Since then there has been over 20 more that include characters from Frozen, Wreck-it Ralph and The Lone Ranger.

Personally, I love Disney, Marvel and Star Wars so if this comes out on Xbox One or PS4 I will get it not just for myself but also my children… Sadly, my obsession personally means I will have to buy all the toys as well. It’s going to be an expensive year.

This news comes at a very crucial time for the company as it is only a day before Disney is due to reveal its quarterly financial results to the world. I’m sure this news is going to improve the share price.

What are your thoughts on Disney Infinity and the merging of worlds?

Console exclusives can make or break the gaming community. On one hand, a strong lineup of exclusives can effectively sell a console with little to no effort on the company’s part. On the other hand, gamers are often forced to pick and choose which consoles they buy, rather than choose the console that is truly right for them. Exclusivity only serves the companies behind the consoles, not the game developers or gamers. Regardless, the upcoming year looks promising for the gaming community. A number of interesting titles, both new and returning, will be made available across multiple systems. Here’s my top five picks for the currently announced 2014 multi-platform lineup:

Watch Dogs

This upcoming action-adventure boasts an open-world, largely fictionalized rendition of Chicago, Illinois. In it, players control an Irish hacker named Aiden Pearce, who can hack into just about any electronic device. Whether or not his skills will be used for good is up to you, as many of his actions can cause havoc on the crowds around him. Whether stealing bank data from an unsuspecting couple or contemplating which citizen would be better off dead, based on their data, Aiden is not a man to be taken lightly. Expect to hear his story in mid-2014.

destiny

Destiny

Much to the surprise of game journalists worldwide, Bungie is diverting some of their attention off of Halo and onto this first-person action-adventure set in what they have dubbed a “mythic science fiction.” This open-world game is not unlike an MMO, though Bungie prefers to call it a “shared-world shooter.” If you think it’s just another Halo clone, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Players take on the role of the “Guardians”, a variety of races that have banded together to defend Earth’s last remaining city in a post-apocalyptic collapse. Although it is expected to be always-online, we can also expect that it will receive the love and care Bungie is known for.

starwars-battlefront

Star Wars: Battlefront

Thought the Star Wars: Battlefront series was dead and gone? Think again. Fans of the first / third-person-shooter hybrid series found themselves pleasantly surprised by the announcement of this upcoming title at E3 2013. Although not much is currently known about the game, we can only expect greatness from such an acclaimed series. A release is expected sometime between late 2014 and early to mid-2015. Mark your calendars!

metal-gear-ground-zeroes

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

Metal Gear Solid is perhaps one of the only mainstream game series with truly niche topics of interest out there. Where else can you find time paradoxes, overblown dialogue, equal opportunity fanservice, and tear-jerking death scenes all in one game? If the few glimpses we’ve had at Ground Zeroes are any indication, the tenth entry in this beloved stealth-action series is following in the footsteps of its predecessors. Acting as the prequel to Metal Gear Solid V and taking place after Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes’ strangest feature is also one of its most innovative: players, who will be granted the opportunity to build their own motherbase, can access certain parts of the game through their smartphone. While gimmicky, it’s an interesting addition to an interesting series. If nothing else, the inevitable Codec conversations about it while be good for a few laughs.

no-mans-sky

No Man’s Sky

Minecraft wasn’t the first game to use a procedurally generated open world, but it sure did popularize it. No Man’s Sky takes a similar premise and places it in a science fiction setting, allowing players to explore entirely uncharted stretches of space for miles at a time. Unique terrains and lifeforms can be found on encountered planets, which can be charted manually by players hoping to find a little adventure.

2013 was a fantastic year for video games, and it looks like it’s the same for the upcoming year!

The next generation of consoles and handhelds offer us mildly better graphics, increase social interaction and some quirky new features to tempt us away from our previous gaming rig. Obviously, each console will have their obligatory first person shooter (Killzone, Battlefield and COD), their driving game (Forza, Need for Speed) and their exclusive launch titles (Knack for PS4 and Ryse for Xbox among others). For of the more interesting games, however, stray away from the tried and tested formulas and venture into new and exciting territory. I wanted to look at five such games that have perked my interest.

knack

Knack – PS4

Knack has been taking a bit of a beating from the games media so far, as it appears to be a cute and cuddly adventure with a less than cute character.  What actually makes this unusual is the fact it is trying to be a homage back to old school of gaming. With its fixed camera and simple mechanic of beating up some goblins before moving on, then doing some platforming,  then moving on, makes it reminiscent of the games of yesteryear (or 1995-2005). If reviews are to be believed however, it comes off as bland and not as charming as I would have hoped. But if you wanted to play something on next gen that doesn’t fit into the mould of every other AAA game then it might be worth looking into.

project-spark

Project Spark – Xbox One

Project Spark is getting some of us in the development community very excited as it allows those with no coding skills to craft a game using a pre-determined set of tools. Early videos suggest you will be mainly be able to create 3rd person adventure games, but some game designers have been experimenting with a forced 2D camera in order to make retro platformers.  Others have confined the action to an arena to make a more multiplayer experience and some have worked on simple top down running games. It looks like games can be shared and also ‘re-mixed’ to create new creations extending the life of a game further. The initial graphics and available packs seem to be set it firmly in the medieval/fantasy period but there is no reason why there will not be other packs to change this. In fact, as it is a free to play game, the way the company hope to monetize it, is to sell addition packs and objects. Either way, this looks very interesting and I look forward to seeing what people do with the tools.

fantasia

Fantasia – Xbox One

It looks like peripheral based gaming has had its day for another 20 years as we have seen guitars, microphones, drums and I even saw a set of holders for your Wiimote that turns it into a violin, conductors baton, trumpet and saxophone.  Xbox One’s Fantasia aims to turn you into a living, breathing, magical conductor as it tracks your movements to unlock and play various levels of music from the slapping bass guitar to the vocal crescendo. Your gestures ignite layer upon layer of effect from simple particle effects to waking sleeping seahorses from their slumber. The game is the next big thing to come out of the Harmonix studios who brought us the original Guitar Hero series and looks very interesting as it tries to re-invigorate that music spark in all of us.

doki-doki

Doki Doki Universe – PS4

Designed by the same team behind the fantastic Toejam and Earl, Doki Doki Universe sees you playing the role of QT3, a forlorn little robot  abandoned by his human family and on the fringe of being scrapped . To avoid this fate you need to prove that you can learn what it is to be human by roaming the planet helping people. The game is part open world puzzle game and part personality test as it hopes to teach you a little about yourself as you play. At this stage it sounds very intriguing and as it is due out this Monday we will not have long to wait.

contrast

Contrast – PS4

I think this title excites me the most as it not only looks stunning but has the amazing mechanic of utilising shadows as a secondary platform element. The protagonist can quite literally become a shadow and use the darkness cast as an additional platform. The characters and art style looks beautiful and the lost father plot line is very interesting.  Although this is an indie title, there seems to be as much buzz about it as any of the mainstream titles.

The next generation of gaming is steering away from the graphics and instead focusing more on the player. The two main systems of the Xbox and the Playstation may be pretty similar under the hood, but their vision of the gaming experience diverge and converge in various ways. Both see social integration as a key feature and connect to social networks as well as having inbuilt social features to connect with other gamers.  Playstation has a strong focus on the indie community and encourages new and interesting IP’s. Whereas Microsoft is making a play to control the living room by integrating TV, movies, music, surfing and games in one complete package. Playstation seem to be polishing its games with 1080p visuals and pushing its hardware to its limits where Xbox is using its connect to literally put the player in the game.

tearaway

Tearaway | PS Vita

From the creators of Little Big Planet, Tearaway is a sweet looking third person papercraft game that sees the hero (either male or female) try to deliver an all important message to the player. The game seems to use all the features the Vita has to offer. From using the camera to take a picture and apply it as a skin to an in-game creature to using the rear touch pad to stick your fingers into the game world to attack.
kinect-sports-rivals-characters

Kinect Rivals | Xbox One

If there is any game that actually ‘puts YOU in the game’ it is Kinect Sports Rivals. The Kinect camera scans you face and body and creates a super athletic version of you to compete in various events that include; bowling, rock climbing, jet skiing, target shooting and tennis. Early videos have made this game highly anticipated and recent delays have annoyed gamers eager to try it.

fighter-within

Fighter Within | Xbox One

The original version of this game for the Xbox 360 Kinect was not a big hit. This updated version, however, using the power of Xbox One and the new Kinect is definitely causing more excitement than its predecessor. With updated graphics, more moves and less lag than the original this game is shaping up to be a fun little living room brawler. What is may lack in game polish it will make up for in exercise points.

fantasia

Fantasia | Xbox One

The latest outing from Harmonix sees a move away from instrument-based games to a more abstract offering. Players are a virtual conductor in a  living, breathing space. This space has various rips in it that open up opportunities to use your arms and movement to interact with the music. The game looks really interesting and I look forward to feeling like you have magic fingers and everything you touch reacts to you.

playroom-ps4

The Playroom PS4

Playstation are not making as much of a feature of their camera as Xbox, but what they have created so far does look good. The Playroom is a collection of ‘activities’ that mix augmented reality with distorted reality. The augmented reality will see you whacking away hordes of mini robots from around your feet, and the distorted reality will see you shake your controller like a maniac as you are convinced that it is inhabited by mini creatures. Weird but strangely compelling!

The newest generation of gaming is almost out in the Xbox One and the PS4. Both consoles will be out by the end of the year (just in time for Christmas of course.) Over 75 million units of the PS3 and the Xbox One have been sold to date, with numbers like that, the new models are sure to make an impact. Few of us have the luxury of purchasing both consoles, so now the next big question is, which one should be on your Christmas list?

Price

From a woman’s perspective, making this decision might be a bit more logical than a man’s. The first question I’d ask when deciding what console to buy is: How much does each unit cost? The Xbox One is priced at over $100 more than the PS4 (due to the fact that the Xbox has an advanced, Kinect sensor) but right away, I’m in favor of the PS4.

xbox-vs-ps4-controller

Control

From previous experience, I prefer Sony’s operating system and controllers to the Kinect sensor on the Xbox. While that may be unfair since the Kinect sensor is equipped with all new technology this time around, but I’m a control freak. I like the knowledge that I control the game in the palm of my hands with the PS4 controller rather than through the sensor.

the-order-1886-main

Games

The games that both consoles present as exclusives aren’t extremely enticing to me and really don’t sway me either way, I think it’s more about the overall presentation of both units. Each unit does have a number of exclusive games and some interesting trailers so for serious gamers, that could be the deciding factor. One thing I don’t like is the lack of internet features on the PS4, I’m taking online classes and I want to be able to browse some websites on my gaming unit.

xbox-vs-ps4

Appearance

Not to be a total girl, but the appearance of the console is important to me. This hardware is going to be part of my house and the last thing I want is an ugly unit taking up space. I like that both consoles this time around are black and have a sleek design. The previous white Xbox 360 gets dirty easily and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Overall Vote

With all of these different elements factored in, I’d have to go with the PS4 for my number one choice this holiday season. Judging by the price, the looks, the games and the overall appearance of the consoles, it just appeals to me more than the Xbox One. That’s not to say I couldn’t be persuaded otherwise or would be against the Xbox One, but for now, I’m sticking with Sony.

Since the major reveal of both consoles, there’s been a slow unveiling of more games, features and news for the Xbox One and the PS4. It has given people a lot to think about in terms of which console is going to be for the next generation. Personally, my opinion since the E3 press conferences has not changed but only been solidified, and my PS4 pre-order still stands.

I’m a current 360 user and a move into the world of Playstation is actually new territory for me, but I’m all about choosing the console that makes the most sense for me each generation, and the PS4 is definitely it. Microsoft severely dropped the ball with announcements of necessary online connectivity and limits on how you can share your games. The backlash was so huge that they went back on their original ideas and have done away with both issues (though the always-on Kinect still stands). For me, it wasn’t enough to make me change my mind. They had already done their damage and their walking away from it felt more out of fear of losing money rather than trying to say they were wrong.

titanfall

As for looking at games, the only exclusive that appeals to me is TitanFall, which is not just an Xbox One exclusive but a Microsoft exclusive, which allows the ability to pick it up for PC or the 360.  Halo and Forza are two franchises I had never gotten into and so while automatic buys for some, they aren’t enough to sway my decision. While Quantum Break looks interesting, it also harkens back to the old PC gaming days of live-action cut scenes mixed with games, which could be either a good or bad thing.

The PS4 doesn’t have a ton of exclusives that are drawing me in either, save for The Order: 1886 which, the more is revealed, the more it looks like it could be a very cool take on an alternate, steampunk era of history.

the-order-1886-main

But it isn’t about exclusives for me. It’s about the poor choices Microsoft made in their initial features of the console as well as about the better hardware and graphics the PS4 will be sporting. Neither console is backward compatible, but Sony has said people can stream PS3 games so for someone like myself who has no back library I’m losing out on, I’m looking forward to playing the Uncharted series, Last of Us, and other PS3 games I missed out on this generation.

Does it mean I will never purchase an Xbox One? Maybe not; after all, this generation my first purchase was a Wii. And there’s nothing wrong with owning multiple consoles. But it wouldn’t be for a couple of years into the generation; instead, I’ll sit back with my PS4 and a copy of Watch Dogs and be more than content.

The whirlwind that is the Xbox One and PS4 pre-launch marketing has me spinning around with excitement. Every day I glean more titbits that tantalize my gaming taste buds and I just keep looking at the launch list of games and want to write about them. The Elder Scrolls Online was one game that actually scared me a little as I thought Skyrim was so massive that Oblivion Online will give the World Of Warcraft a run for its money. With this in mind, I thought I would reflect on various games set in medieval times.

assasins-creed-1

Assassins Creed

While the whole of Assassin’s Creed spans several timelines, the original takes place in the Dark Ages, where we meet the Altair and learn the story of Desmond and his lineage. The original lets you travel to various cities during this time; Jerusalem, Masyaf, Acre and Damascus, all created to be as historically accurate as possible. Although many have long forgotten the original after being overshadowed by 2 and 3, it still stands as an awesome game and a really dedicated tribute to the time period.

eldar-scrolls-oblivion

Elder Scrolls IV – Oblivion

Oblivion (and much of the other Elder Scrolls games in the franchise) takes place in a fantastical version of the Dark Ages, as opposed to the more historical one of Assassin’s Creed. But it still turns the period into an amazing landscape, with distinct cities, people, and creatures. Skyrim continued that theme with the added benefit of dragons, something we all wish really existed in the Dark Ages.

DivinityII-The-Dragon-Knight-Saga

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga

An action-roleplaying game to its core, Divinity II follows the typical blueprint of a fantasy/Dark Ages game. Out for the PC and 360, and it’s actually a sequel to Divine Divinity. It runs on the Gamebryo engine, which is the same one used for Oblivion, so you’ll see similarities visually. Unfortunately, there were a ton of graphical glitches and other issues that kept the game from being as successful as Oblivion.

theif-2014

Thief Series

Thief is a mix of steampunk ideas with Dark Ages time periods. Steampunk is usually connected with the Victorian era, but these games do it a little differently. The game was pretty revolutionary for its time, spawning all of the stealth games we know and love and being one of the first to have a morally ambiguous world.

dragon-age

Dragon Age Series

Bioware took its own shot at the Dark Ages, moving away from the sci-fi epic of Mass Effect for a time to start a similar RPG serious but set in a fantasy Medieval world. It has all the elements you are used to from Mass Effect; dialogue tree branches, lots of NPC interacting, and similar battles (but turn guns into swords or bows and arrows).

Among the vast array of video games genres, spy games hold a special place in people’s hearts, they take all around the world, to exotic locations and we kill people. Spy games have held the attention of the players for years as they accept missions, steal secrets, and use a selection of cool gadgets. With such games as Metal Gear 5 coming out soon I thought we should take a look at a few choice spy games that have gone before it.

spy-vs-spy

Spy vs. Spy

This multi-player video game was first released in 1984, and developed by First-star Software. It revolved around two pin-headed spies displayed on a split-screen. The story of the game is based on a comic strip of MAD magazines that was famous in the 1960s. The plot of the game is centered on the ability of two spies who with the help of the weapons and complex traps aim at murdering each other.

Originally on the Apple II computers and Atari, it was on the ZX Spectrum, Game boy, iOS Xbox, and Nintendo Entertainment System.

The game was revamped in 2005 by Vicious Cycle software for the Playstation 2 with additional features such as additional weapons and costumes as well as various game types beyond the regular deathmatch.

Both the version’s innovative game plan and twists were rated well by the players. Especially the version on ZX spectrum was listed 20 on official Top 100 Games of All Time.

perfect-dark-zero

Perfect Dark Zero

Released back in 2005 on Xbox 360 Perfect Dark Zero sees the protagonist of the story is Joanna Dark who is a bounty hunter. Key characters of the game include Jack Dark (the father of the protagonist), Chandra Shekhar (a computer hacker) and Nathan Zeigler (researcher). The story revolves around a series of adventurous missions of Joanna who with the help of her father and the hacker goes on a mission to rescue the researcher, captured in Honk Kong. The story is full of suspense where one mission leads to another.

The video game was commercially successful as it bagged high ratings from the players. It was rated 9.0 out of 10 by Greg Kasavin of GameSpot. Joanna Dark also cemented her place in the most attractive video game girls of all time.

splinter-cell-double-agent

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent

Released in 2006 Sam Fischer returns in a game that follows on just where Chaos Theory left off. This game won a tonne of awards and was released on pretty much every platform available. The game was rated by the UK as the highest caliber game in the stealth gaming genre. However, Xbox 360 version was considered the best conversion.

metal-gear-4

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Solid Snake returned (older and greyer) to our consoles in 2008 with the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on Playstation 3. It is the continuation of the metal Gear Solid 2 series and the whole world is dependent on the military forces. The story revolves around a series of events when Solid Snake with the help of the patriots rises for the last time to rescue the world from the powers of Liquid Ocelot.

It is considered to be one of the flawless video games ever by the players as per the reviews. As per millions of reviews and ratings the game is rated 9.0 out of 10. I’m just not sure what happened after they released Metal Gear Rising: Revengence…

metal-gear-5

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

This is the latest version of the Metal Gear series which will be released shortly on Xbox One (and probably Ps4). The story follows the events of the Metal Gear Solid: The Peace Walkers and the trailer reveals that after nine long years Snake recovers from a coma and fights unknown enemies while escaping. Now going by the name of Punished Snake he can explore a vast open world riding his trusty horse, commandeering tanks and sneaking around as only Snake can.

Steampunk has been a long talked about, but only as of the past 10 years or so recognized sci-fi genre. It has taken video games by storm and while recent releases aren’t the first time it has been found in games, it has gained in popularity in the past 5 years or so.  The recent announcement of The Order 1886, a PS4 exclusive, has brought back some love to Steampunk. Let’s take a look at a few games that have been set in this fictional time period:

chaos-engine

The Chaos Engine (1993)

A top-down run-and-gun game for the Commodore Amiga, and later a whole slew of other systems, it embraced steampunk before embracing steampunk was even cool. There were 6 different characters and players choose two mercenaries to play with. With four worlds and four levels in each world, it was a lot of fun to play. What made it even better was the industrial soundtrack that went along with it. A lot of people don’t remember this game, but for those who do, it was often a first introduction to the idea of steampunk.

final-fantasy-ix

Final Fantasy IX (2000)

The 9th Final Fantasy and last to debut on the original Playstation, the plot centers on a war between two nations, right smack in fictional steampunk time. Final Fantasy games in later years had a lot of remnants of steampunk ideas, but 9 was one of the ones that really took it on as a whole basis for its design.

theif-2014

Thief Series (2004 -2014)

Thief is a little different in that instead of being set in an alternate Victorian time, it is instead set in a Medieval era with strange machines and futuristic weapons. Thief has really captivated players for some time and a new one is in the works for the next generation. So far, the designs we have seen are beautiful and while not totally as steampunk as in the past, we can hope that the series will still have those quirky machines and the overall feel of a time period that didn’t quite happen.

bioshock-steampunk

BioShock (2007)

BioShock is an interesting take on what steampunk is. It’s not quite the steampunk we know, but it’s an idea of what the world could be like, in the 50s, if we lived it, you know, underwater. And had crazy guns. It’s sort of a sideways take on steampunk, but the idea of a different sort of history is much the same.  The newer game in the franchise, Bioshock: Infinite, also has a steampunk feel, with interesting technology set in the 1920s in a city in the sky (terrifying robot enemies included).

Machinarium-steampunk

Machinarium (2009)

A gorgeous point-and-click adventure, Machiarium follows a little robot named Josef, who the player controls to solve a variety of puzzles. In doing so, he’s trying to stop a city from blowing up. Kind of a crazy adventure for a little robot. The game still holds up beautifully and is highly recommended (and is on multiple platforms).

dishonoured-2012

Dishonored (2012)

Dishonored is a visually dark and gritty game, primarily considered a stealth action game much in the way of a thief, though with not quite as in-depth of a stealth system. It’s true to steampunk ideals of being set around the late 1800s, and early 1900s, and including the kind of technology you would never have found back then. With intricate bombs, guns, and even magic, it’s definitely a world, unlike true history.

torchlight-2

Torchlight 2 (2012)

The first Torchlight definitely had touches of steampunk in it, but Torchlight 2 pits you up against The Alchemist as your enemy. I mean, it doesn’t get more steampunk than that. The visual style, the design of the armor and weapons, and the color scheme all ring true of the genre. Plus, for a dungeon crawler, it really holds its own against the like of the Diablo series.

the-order-1886-character

The Order

Back to that original Playstation 4 exclusive we mentioned earlier, The Order: 1886 is set in an alternate universe where the industrial revolution came around in order to win a war against some unspeakable and definitely not human enemies. Who they are we have yet to find out, but we know the game will take place in London and is a third-person action title. There is no set release date yet other than that it’ll be due in 2014, but it’ll be interesting to see their direction with the genre.

Racing games have always been some of the most popular games on any platform. Since the first F-1 game on the Atari (released in 1976), gamers have shown a special love for racing games, and every game console since has carried a line of racing titles. From the Wipeout days of the first Playstation to the much anticipated Drive Club for the Playstation 4, there have been a number of great racing games.

Here are our picks for 15 cross-platform racing games that you have got to play:

Xbox

Need-for-Speed-Most-Wanted

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (360)

Search for cars all around the city to race to the finish line. You’ll also have to run from the police and your rivals to make it to the end. The game offers open-world play and there are no menus or lobbies. You’ll have to make constant split-second decisions to make it to the end, and the adrenaline rush makes for some exciting and fun game play.

grid

Grid (360)

You’ll race on real circuits from Europe and street racing tracks from around the world in more than 40 licensed cars. There is open-ended play, but also open-ended consequences. If you want to slam through turns, expect to also suffer the damage. You can play alone or enjoy a robust multi-player option.

Forza-motorsport-4

Forza Motorsport 4

Enjoy a wide variety of race types in this game, included  car clubs, rival races, and career races. There are a wide variety of tracks, cars, and more. The graphics are gorgeous, and there are optional Kinect modes to add another layer to game play.

Playstation

shift-2

Shift 2 (PS3)

Shift 3 is possibiliy the best looking racing game of the current gen consoles and gives you a good idea of what next gen racers will look like. It’s controls and handling are focused on realism so don’t expect to bump any competitors of the road as collisions have near perfect physics.

F1-Championship-Edition-PS3

F1 Championship Edition (PS3)

Although their is not much choice in F1 racing games on the current gen consoles, F1 Championship Edition on the PS3 is in my opinion the best one to go for. Released back in 2007 it is starting to look its age but the live weather is pretty cool (unless its raining) and being able to pressure other racers to make a mistake is a feature that is taken up by all future F1 games. There are plenty of tracks to choose from and the driver changes happened as they did in 2006 which is pretty cool if you were playing in 2007 but sadly not very relevant today.

gran-turismo5
Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

GT5 is still impressing the masses in terms of gameplay and variety. It has every sort of four wheeled racing vehicle from simple Karts to modern day F1 cars and everything you will find between. Gran Turismo looks lovely but with new entries such as Forza and Shift 2 coming on the scene it needs to ‘take it up a gear’.

wipeout-fusion

Wipeout Fusion (Ps2)

If you are still rocking a PS2 or like me you have a collection of consoles that are building up a classic Playstation 2 racing game has to be Wipeout Fusiion. This has you racing their iconic hovercars in the future. You’ll race at lightning fast speeds, enjoy gorgeous tracks, and fight to the finish in a futuristic landscape. This game will provide fun for hours.

Nintendo

mario-kart-wii

Mario Kart (Wii)

You don’t have to race a slick Formula 1 car to have a good time and an amazing race experience. The Mario Kart games are classic racing games that are a lot of fun to play. By the sixth iteration they had really nailed it. I really enjoyed the previous versions on the SNES and N64 but Mario Kart 64 added more characters, tracks, features and fun to the whole package.

Diddy-Kong-Racing

Diddy Kong Racing (N64)

Similar to Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing added a new element to the concept by pitting you against a boss after winning your individual races in that world. If you beat all the bosses, you can race them again to win special amulets. The game is a lot of fun, and the adventure mode has since been pinched by the more popular Mario Kart.

excitebike-64

Excitebike (64)

Get a little change by swapping out your Formula 1 car for a dirt bike. You can race through 20 tracks and enjoy extended game play through six mini game events. The game play is fast, and it’s fun to play with friends.

Mobile

real-racing-3

Real Racing 3 (Android)

Get great graphics on this game for iOS and Android, including real-life tracks and cars. You can race alone or join multi-player mode with your friends. You can even race against each other’s best times — whether you are both signed in or not.

table-top-racing

Table Top Racing (iPhone)

Just like its name suggests, you race mini cars on a table top in this game. The makers of Wipeout are behind this game, which has game play similar to Mario Kart. You won’t get a lot of realistic game play, but you’ll have a ton of fun.

sonic-all-star-racing

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (iPad)

Enjoy a blast from the past with this high-intensity racing game for iPhone and iPad. You can choose from a variety of tracks and cars, battle friends, and drive at lightning speeds. You can even drive a plane and other non-traditional “vehicles.”

crazy-taxi

Crazy Taxi (iPhone)

In this game, you’re not really racing other cars to the finishing line; you’re racing the clock to get your fare to their destination on time. You can jump, take shortcuts, and pull off other hair-raising stunts to get there. This game is a ton of fun, and it’s available for iPhone and iPad.

Arcade

daytona-usa

Daytona USA

Released in 1996, Daytona USA is one of the highest grossing racing games ever. People packed arcades across the globe to not only race the computer but to join up to 8 others for competitions. It did spawn a nmber of poor consoles versions and in 2011 Xbox released it on Xbox Live Arcade.

ridge-racer

Ridge Racer

Ridge Racer was said to be the first 3D arcade game with texture mapped polygons. Game play emulates a traditional Formula 1 race with tracks through cities in a variety of setting. Precise driving skills are necessary to win.

outrun

Outrun

The daddy of arcade racing games was Outrun. Coming out back in 1986 this Ferrari based racer saw you gallivant across the US with a blonde in the passenger seat and the wind in your hair. This fantastic game not only won several awards but has been ported to over 20 different home computers/consoles.

Coming Soon

forza-5

With the introduction of new game systems like the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One, there are sure to be many more great racing games to add to the list. DriveClub is generating a lot of buzz for the PS4, and Forza 5 is getting a lot of people excited for the Xbox One.
